She was about as Native American as the pirates were authentic, but no one gripes about Captain Hook or Mr Smee. It's a play about a boy in an arrested state of development and pretty much all the characters are written from the POV of a ten (give or take) year old boy. The outrage is typically Ott.

Err.. you know that's not the same thing right?

Why not? If you're going to get bent out of shape about an inaccurate cultural portrayal you might as well go all the way. ::shrug:: PS: There are a lot of "white" Native Americans on the East Coast due to intermarrying with settlers. Not all Natives are brown with straight, dark hair.

Are you trolling? One is a culture and a race that has been and continues to be oppressed, one is a group of outlaws (with no set cultural standard anyway, by the way).

I'm not trolling, I'm just failing to get upset. You on the other hand, are falling into the trap of treating all Native Americans as a single, monolithic culture, which they are not. There is no one correct portrayal of Native Americans. This is an adaptation of a nearly hundred year old play. Who knows what the Tiger Lily subplot will be like until the film is released. If it's offensive, then maybe I'll get annoyed, or not, depending on what else there is to get outraged about on the day.

I'm going to go on a limb here and say you don't get to decide what's offensive or not to Native Americans. I imagine you think blackface is "not offensive" because being black is not a monolithic culture, and I can't imagine what you actually might consider racist.

Being NA is only a part of my personal cultural history, but don't let that stand in the way of your white knighting.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Lol sure it is.

Even if that were true, you'd still be wrong and idiotic to claim that the Native American portrayals in Peter Pan are somehow accurate to any group of Native Americans, and don't represent a racist stereotype.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Both sides of the family, actually. But that's beside the point. I never said that any of the portrayals in Peter Pan were accurate. I did say they were a ten year old boy's (and a British one, at that) impressions of accurate, which isn't the same thing. At all. As for the upcoming film, I'm not going to get preemptively bent out of shape over something which isn't worth getting bent out of shape about.
