Ok, see, you lost me at "trashy, unhelpful and patronizing", and also since when is "fanfic culture" a monolith?

Here's a college kid who loves canon A and has never read fic for it. She takes a class about fic, leaves a comment as instructed. Hordes of fans scream at her for "doing it wrong" (never mind that we can't even agree on what constitutes "wrong" and "right" in the first place!), and then insult her.

Well, that's one fan who'll never want to join the community, thanks fandom!

Then I'll assume you haven't read any of the reviews in question.

"Have you actually even read your work?" is a pretty unhelpful and trashy comment to put on anyone's work, even if you were totally familiar with it.

And you're assuming a lot by assuming all the people taking this class gave a fuck about fandom. The two students organizing it did. The rest could have been coasting to an easy A for all you know.

I've read a lot of them.

The fact that that ONE review is the one everyone quotes when they want to talk about how awful they were should tell you something.

An awful lot of the comments indicated at least some passing familiarity with the canons, so I think saying they were looking for an easy A is a bigger assumption than that they were interested in fandom.

Why are we being assholes to people who are interested in fandom?

Help me out, where can I read these reviews?

Here's waldorph's: http://archiveofourown.org/works/839637
The rude one is at the top of page 2; others below (scroll a lot; that first one generated long threads)

Wonderful, thank you! I opened the link from further down this thread but didn't find the comment.

I don't know why you're blaming the fandom for this. Blame the instructor for assigning this despite the fact that they were well aware that this would cause drama.

I don't think she did realize it would cause drama. Everything I've seen suggests it was well-intentioned, if somewhat naive. Which is a pretty good decription of all the kids involved in this. Certain parts of fandom, on the other hand, got their rage on awfully fast.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
It was incredibly naive, really. To be honest, I'd go as far as to call it dumb.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I would even go so far as to call it...a learning experience. Crazy, right?
