Lmao seriously. All the gender studies courses I ever took were full of people who were straight up anti-feminist, but needed to pad their GPA. I was usually one of maybe 2 (out of 20 or so) students who actually cared about the subject.

y'all had really fucking depressing college experiences, then

Yes, my experiences in archetypal blow-off classes reflect my entire college experience.

You can pad your GPA with gender studies classes? This is news to me. I took one and it kicked my ass, took my GPA *down*, and I actually know stuff about feminism. I imagine people who are looking for a blowoff class would fail it.

I suspect it has to do with the quality of the school you go to...

It depends on the class tbh. To qualify for the more advanced courses I had to take a couple of women's studies 101 type classes, and those were embarrassingly easy and definitely GPA padders. They were taught by optimistic but inexperienced professors, so they ended up being the sort of touchy-feely discussion based classes where you'd get an A as long as you showed up with about as much understanding of gender theory as your average Jezebel user, so most people did well without even trying.

The advanced classes did kick people's asses, but you could always tell who had gone into them expecting another blowoff class.

da
Depends on the school, I think. Mine didn't have touchy-feely classes; the "intro to X studies" (for X read any minority) course were all pretty butt-kicking. I think the general theory was to keep anyone who didn't have an actual interest in the subject from advancing.
