AYRT like OP, with rageprufrock I just can't put my finger on why. It's like she almost drowns the characters in her writing style until they're barely recognisable. But she writes so consistently that her stories get loads of love anyway? iDK. Something like that.

It ended up putting me off her fics entirely, just like in the secret, although that's probably about another writer entirely.

One day a certain fic was just a little too smug for me and I could never enjoy it again. There were a hundred little tells that added up to that moment, each of them irrelevant in themselves.

Only about a year later did I come across some fandom controversy way back that she'd been involved in and I found out I wasn't the only one.

She is a very good writer, in that she has a definite style and the conviction to stick to it, and she takes a lot of care in her writing. But tone matters just as much in longer fics, and hers just wasn't for me. Too po-faced about what in the end are just fanfics. I think I would have more easily overlooked it had she been writing original fiction, but I don't know. I felt the same way about Cloud Atlas.
