I hand wave that as "Ash" is basically a "new" person each season. Sure, he meets up with a previous companion each season, but it's ALWAYS the last companion, never May or Misty or whoever before that one. That part of the Ash adventures is over and has effectively been wiped clean.

Also, it's a show for kids in Japan. the kids of today will not know the Ash of the 90s and how he let Pidgeot go. If they do, they went digging for the older anime out of curiosity.

I just enjoy the show as is these days and don't whine.

Clearly the answer is a stock of Ash clones they release into a new region every season after they stick 'em with a Pikachu. Also solves the aging issue.

I can dig it. Clones aren't unheard of in pokemon. Sure beats the coma thing.
