I know I'm not even close to being a BNF, but I'm always terrified this is me.

Same.

A lot of my fics are involved and complex, possibly to the point of being dense, because that's the sort of thing I enjoy writing and reading. No one's ever said it's smug, but I always wonder if "I find you and your writing intimidating" is actually code for "You and your writing are just trying to be superior and pretentious."

+1 to you both. I especially worry because while my ideas are long and plotty, I lack the skill to write them as well as they could be. In the hands of a good writer who could deliver the story in anorganic way, I think tthey'd be great. Because I'm writing ideas above my punching weight though, I think they probably sound pretentious and arrogant. :(

Are you me? Because this could be me. I'm not a BNF, although one of my fics is popular-ish, and I like doing research and I'm now super paranoid about my authors notes now.
