USPS help/advice

(Anonymous) 2015-03-11 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
So I have a package that I'm thinking was lost. It's now two days late from the expected arrival date, and the tracking page hasn't been updated since it left the state it was sent from, five days ago. Normally I would think the post office is just slow and it'll come in a couple days, because I know the "expected arrival date" isn't actually guaranteed, but I order stuff online constantly and I've never had a situation where the tracking wasn't updated in five days so it's worrying me. I attempted calling the USPS customer service phone number but was on hold for almost half an hour before finally hanging up. I ended up emailing the store about it and will hopefully hear back from them tomorrow, but is there anything else you guys would recommend I do? I would hate to lose the money I spent. :(

I'd go down to the post office maybe? Was it insured? Do you have the receipts for everything? If it was priority mail and/or it was insured and the post office lost it then you can try to get your money back.

The post office is a mess though so it might take some time to sort out. Part of the reason I don't like selling online and rarely do it is because packages can get lost or damaged so easily (and since I'm not a big company it really hurts me to have to refund money.)

I thought of that but didn't think they'd be any help (there've been situations in the past where the tracking showed the package was at my post office but wasn't being delivered for some reason, and when I went down there they were no help at all). Especially since the tracking shows the last location as being where it was sent from (which is on the west coast, I'm on the east) so I'm thinking even if I did go to the post office they'd be like "the tracking shows it's on the other side of the country, we can't help you". It's just frustrating.

It might have accidentally be left at last location, I'd definately ask in the post office! Also sometimes strange things happen. I had a package travel to my ex for 3 weeks once, which was more than 3 times regular time. Filled in a missing package claim and everything - then it turned up eventually.

Thanks. I think I'm going to wait a little longer and see if it shows up but if not I guess I will end up going to the post office. I hate dealing with them since they're pretty useless but I will if that's my only option.

Could it be held up at customs? I got a parcel through yesterday that had spent a week in London and when I got the customs slip, I realised that was why.

It's going from one part of the US to another part of the US so customs isn't involved, but it's totally possible it's stuck at the original location for some reason. I'm hoping it'll come soon!

I'd wait a while longer and keep an eye on the tracking info, though to be honest, the USPS tracking has never really updated fast enough for me to be of any practical use. I only get it as a confirmation to the receiver that I mailed it off and as proof it was delivered.

That's what I've heard! I was looking stuff up online and came across SO MANY people who said the exact same thing you did, that the tracking never worked for them and really only showed that it was delivered and nothing else. I've never had that experience before (it's always been updated every step along the way so for it to go five days without being updated was really unusual) but it sounds like maybe I've just been really lucky and it not being updated is more the norm. I'm hoping if I wait an extra couple days it'll show up!

I actually left the USPS a few months ago due to injury, but there was word circulating even back in November that several mail processing plants were going to be closed due to federal funding issues. Some people have been experiencing delivery delays that appear to be related to those potential closures. The problem with closing mail processing plants is that there's a lot of rerouting of the planes/tractor trailers that move the out state deliveries, which adds to the delivery time. I've managed to luck out with a couple super fast deliveries sent through priority mail and first class. My husband, meanwhile, had to wait a couple weeks for a parcel sent via standard.
