Pretty much this. When this first blew up I read the syllabus for the class and it was painfully obvious that the students running it thought it would be fun to run a course where they could read kinky smutty fanfic for class credit, but they'd tried to toss in some sociology-type stuff to make it sound like more than "We're going to read porn and talk about it." Hence the participation-in-fandom requirements. Except participating in any fandom doesn't really follow a class rubric.
