Judging by a couple of hints through the series, I think Helga was always pretty happy with the idea as well. That little scene in 'Otherwise Engaged', for example: "Helga, I think my engine is warming up." "It was my fondest wish that this should happen!" (from around 6:30 to 6:47 in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiQg_H_RI_c )

I don't know. I never shipped him and René, his crush notwithstanding, because Gruber really did deserve better. I'm not sure about Helga, though. That said, I wouldn't at all mind them having a loving marriage of convenience while they both have other lovers on the side. Gruber can find a nice man who'll treat him right while having the defense of a beautiful wife to throw people off the scent, and Helga can indulge her desires for men with darker inclinations while having someone nice and supportive to come home to.

I just adore Gruber though. He was easily my favourite character.

People thinks Rene reciprocates Gruber's love? By the end of the show, not even Gruber thinks that (I ship Gruber/Colonel Von Stromm though, Helga/HerrFlick is Helga's OTP). That is part of the beauty of the relationship between Gruber and Rene, by the end even Gruber knows it is a lost cause, but he can't stop loving him.

I do think Rene cares about Gruber a little, in a friendship way. Even when Gruber has long since ceased to be part of the scary Nazis and is pretty much on Rene's side spying on the rest of the Germans, Rene is nowhere near as harsh on him as he could get away with. It is never going to be a reciprocal romantic love though.

Oh. And YAY! Allo' Allo' secret!

I had no idea they filmed one more episode. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, OP!
(And I kind of liked the original ending for Gruber and Helga, too, even if it came a bit out of the left field. It surprised me at first, and I understand why some people disliked it, but then I came across a very good fic exploring their relationship and it really clicked for me.)

Even in The Return continuity I can’t see them as anything other than possibly friends after a few more meetings, because Rene would be honest with him then.

And I kind of ship him with Helga in the original continuity
