Character bashing in fics. I hate it so much, even when it is a character I don't actually like.

Professors who want medical documentation for the flu. Seriously? No, I didn't go to the doctor for the flu. But I had a temperature of 102, so I really don't think you or anyone else wanted me in class.

I am with you on the second one. The last time a professor asked me that I was just like "I don't go to the Doctor for that and I can't afford to go to the Doctor for that."

I'm an adult who pays for these classes, I understand why they have an absence policy but I always felt like as long as I was still within the allotted amount of absences you shouldn't question why I'm gone.

I never understood the second one, if I'm so sick that I can't go to class I sure as hell wont be able to go to the Doctors to get a note. I'll be lying in bed all day feeling like I'm dying. Thankfully my lecturers were really lax about this but I had friends who were not so lucky.

On that first point: I hate Harry Potter fic so, so much. Even years after the end of the series, people still want to vent how much they despise Ron.

I hate that. Ron is not close to my favorite character, and there are parts of him that really bug me. But it still pisses me off how much bashing there is. If you need to resort to bashing then you really aren't that good of a writer. There are so many other, better, ways to deal with a character you don't like.

I actually ran across a Hermione-bashing fic the other day where it was the typical "independent Harry" story except that Ron stayed with Harry and Hermione abandoned him. On the one hand, kind of refreshing that Ron wasn't the one bashed. On the other hand, no, Hermione is awesome and would not ever abandon Harry and I hate bashing so much.

I agree with both of you (and the OP) character bashing is such an epidemic in the HP fandom. and it's especially bad in independent!Harry fic. My experience with those fics is usually "someone is going to get bashed."

My experience is that EVERYONE gets bashed in those fics, like holy shit did they even like the books in the first place what the fuck

It's been years and I still can't wrap my head around it.

All I can guess is that they project themselves onto Harry a little bit. So I guess they like (or identify with) him. And then anyone who's ever wronged Harry is treated as 'the bad guy' sometimes in ridiculously over the top ways.

The second bothers me because it's so classist, especially for K-12 graders. Like, okay, all the poor kids who maybe can't afford to drop hundreds on a doctor visit for a flu are automatically dinged way harder for being absent than Tiffy the Millionaire is.

They do that at my work. Holy gods, I'm an adult, not one of the hordes of teens you hire. If I'm too sick to work, I'm too sick (two sick days in over a year).

And no, I didn't go to the doctor, it wasn't a 'doctor' thing, they wouldn't have done anything but tell me to drink fluids and rest and I can't afford to pay for that kind of 'advice'.

That's really stupid, since there's nothing a doctor can really do for the everyday flu except treat the symptoms. Who the hell wouldn't opt to skip the co-pay and just stay at home being miserable and drinking Theraflu or something?

Exactly. I only go to the doctor if/when I've reached the point where I can't stop coughing long enough to sleep. At that point I go to the doctor so I can get a prescription for codeine. But the doctor is not going to have any idea how long I've been sick and is not going to be willing to write a note for me.
