I really hate it when people spell the name Stephen with a V. Like they think people won't pronounce it correctly if you spell it the normal way?! How stupid do they think people are?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I know some Stephens actually pronounced Steffen /shrug

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't that spelled Stefan?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes. But it could also be Stefen or Stephen. And Stefan that could also be pronounced "Stef-on" like the SNL character.

names are tricky things, man

Yep. This. The first time I heard it pronounced the other way was a pretty big surprise to me--I'm so used to this spelling variation being pronounced as 'Steffen/Steffan' that I still trip over saying it like 'Steven'.

Welcome to the world of spelling variations, where both are the normal way.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the you spell it in Dutch. I would prefer it if more English words were spelled like that it would make learning English so much easier.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, Prime Minister.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, you're one of those Name Fandom people. I bet you get pissed when you meet women named Evelyn or Meredith or Shirley because you think those are still boys' names.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Only Meredith is a boy's name. Evelyn and Shirley are surnames.

(actually I don't mind Evelyn for a boy or girl. I don't like Shirley on anyone, it's dated and sounds like "surely.")

that's great, you're several decades late to air this objection

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And what is the "normal" way?

In my neck of the woods, "Steven" is pronounced "Stee-vin", and "Stephen" is pronounced "Ste-fahn" or "Ste-fin". So if you tell me your name is "Stee-vin", your name is getting spelled with a "v" unless you tell me otherwise.

/personal anecdote

I like Steven too! Which is weird because I'm usually the first one to hate child characters the minute they start breathing.

I don't have an aversion to children characters, and I definitely like him :) A lot of it has to do with the optimism too.

I tend to dislike the jerky, annoying, useless, spoiled child characters. I'm aware this is usually the more realistic direction, but there's a reason I don't watch shows like Ben 10 for this specific reason.

I tend to gravitate towards kid characters who are kind, sweet, and earnest. Steven hits all the right mark: he's optimistic and caring; he makes mistake, but never with any ill-intent; and he's likely to fix it through his own brand of usefulness. So yeah, I adore Steven.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
People who claim Steven is a horrible obnoxious child character just seem to be children haters in general, honestly.

I'm not sure how old he and Connie are supposed to be (maybe 10?), but he's perfectly acceptable and well written.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Steven has grown so much since the show has started.

At the beginning I was a little annoyed because I thought they were going to go the route of the kid who always messes up again and again and needs others to save him, but I'm glad I stuck with it because he's a total sweetheart and has learned to use his strengths to help people.

Text: I’m not a big fan of most kids in fiction, because I kinda really dislike the precious moppet stereotype & the cloying storylines that come with it.

BUT I REALLY FRICKIN’ LOVE STEVEN.

I love his positive energy and his optimism and his imagination, and his antics make me smile.

S!B: I see a lot of people cite Steven as the ultimate example for an eye-rolling kid stereotype and wonder why I don’t see it.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I normally hate the kid characters but I love Steven, he is so sweet and kind! How could anyone hate him! In fact most of the character
in this show are likable to me.

One of the people who works on the show has confirmed that their relationship is indeed romantic.

Why is this a secret? I thought everybody loves Steven. Especially since he's grown up so much during this season without losing his compassion and sweet nature.
