I really hate it when people spell the name Stephen with a V. Like they think people won't pronounce it correctly if you spell it the normal way?! How stupid do they think people are?

Stef-on could be someone's attempt at "Stephane" (French for Stephen and Stefan).

NAYRT, but there definitely are a lot of misspelled names out there, either because people have heard it and don't know how to spell it, or they're trying to give their children "Yooneek" names.

Yep. This. The first time I heard it pronounced the other way was a pretty big surprise to me--I'm so used to this spelling variation being pronounced as 'Steffen/Steffan' that I still trip over saying it like 'Steven'.

Really? To me that is extremely odd.

Only Meredith is a boy's name. Evelyn and Shirley are surnames.

And what is the "normal" way?

In my neck of the woods, "Steven" is pronounced "Stee-vin", and "Stephen" is pronounced "Ste-fahn" or "Ste-fin". So if you tell me your name is "Stee-vin", your name is getting spelled with a "v" unless you tell me otherwise.
