I really hate it when people spell the name Stephen with a V. Like they think people won't pronounce it correctly if you spell it the normal way?! How stupid do they think people are?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I know some Stephens actually pronounced Steffen /shrug

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't that spelled Stefan?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes. But it could also be Stefen or Stephen. And Stefan that could also be pronounced "Stef-on" like the SNL character.

names are tricky things, man

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think Stefen is a name.

Stef-on could be someone's attempt at "Stephane" (French for Stephen and Stefan).

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
or maybe theres just all kinds of names and pronunciations out there

it's not like there's some Central Names Directory that everyone is trying to obey

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT, but there definitely are a lot of misspelled names out there, either because people have heard it and don't know how to spell it, or they're trying to give their children "Yooneek" names.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
Pity. Every time I see a "Reece" or an "Arron" it makes me cringe. Learn to f-ing spell.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
it isn't? better tell my mom that my brother's name, Stefan, isn't actually a name!

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh? Stefan is a name. StefEn isn't.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's Stephen and we call him Steph

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Like a girl named Stephanie....ookay.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)

Yep. This. The first time I heard it pronounced the other way was a pretty big surprise to me--I'm so used to this spelling variation being pronounced as 'Steffen/Steffan' that I still trip over saying it like 'Steven'.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
Really? To me that is extremely odd.

/mother of a Stephen, pronounced Steven, as is every other Stephen I have ever known.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Welcome to the world of spelling variations, where both are the normal way.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the you spell it in Dutch. I would prefer it if more English words were spelled like that it would make learning English so much easier.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, Prime Minister.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, you're one of those Name Fandom people. I bet you get pissed when you meet women named Evelyn or Meredith or Shirley because you think those are still boys' names.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Only Meredith is a boy's name. Evelyn and Shirley are surnames.

(actually I don't mind Evelyn for a boy or girl. I don't like Shirley on anyone, it's dated and sounds like "surely.")

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
tell us more about your namepinions

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
You can't be serious.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
He is serious; don't call him Shirley.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
that's great, you're several decades late to air this objection

(Anonymous) 2015-03-14 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And what is the "normal" way?

In my neck of the woods, "Steven" is pronounced "Stee-vin", and "Stephen" is pronounced "Ste-fahn" or "Ste-fin". So if you tell me your name is "Stee-vin", your name is getting spelled with a "v" unless you tell me otherwise.
