Re: Discussion for Secret #16

I think it's a very personal reaction. I watch a lot of horror movies, across all subgenres. I really 'enjoy' the 'gorn/torture porn' genre, because it causes a visceral reaction. I don't 'get my rocks off' to it, or anything, but I'm not phased by supernatural horrors. Real (as in non-supernatural, but still fictional) people doing horrible things leaves me shaken. When I see an injury on screen, I can often feel a phantom sensation of it, and that's when I have to pause the movie and go look at pictures of kittens, or something.

Psychological horror, especially with certain topics, has been almost comforting, because I have experienced it. I feel like other people can get me, or I can say, "you know like in that movie? That's what I feel right now."

I feel like it's made me a more compassionate person. I have a frame of reference, albeit indirect, to horrible injuries or experiences, so I can empathise/sympathise better, and I'm not going to dismiss it. I don't have to personally experience, say, getting my foot broken on purpose to realize just how horrific it is, because I've seen it play out.

Other people react in different ways: some take their fear out on others, some find it cathartic, some panic, some desensitize; all can happen for different reasons. It's so dependent on what else has happened in your life.
