I never read Understanding Comics, but I'm curious about this dude's socalled "guidelines".

I have a few JTHM and Squee volumes around I should dig out. I really did love the series, especially Squee, and Jhonen Vasquez is a gem. I'm glad he shit all over these 'guidelines'.

I have Understanding Comics and I think it's a very interesting read. It's not so much about following his 'guidelines' imo, but he presents ideas about comic construction and perception. I think it's worth reading even if you don't agree with McCloud's ideas.
I personally never got the impression that he's trying to say that there's only One True Way to do comics, nor that his opinion is the be-all-end-all of it.

Hmmm, I'll have to look into it then, thank you!

:) You're welcome. I hope you enjoy it!

Yeah, if anything he's arguing the exact opposite of a One True Way.

You have to take the stuff Scott McCloud says about the emotional meaning of lines with several grains of salt. He's projecting there, and that's not the strongest part of the book. Sadly, people probably repeat that, because it sounds mysterious and deep.

That said, the book is hardly prescriptive when it comes to comics or art in general. He explictly endorses non-linearity and abstraction as part of a multi-dimensional spectrum of cartooning.

This! I think McCloud is really smart about comics but his approach can be esoteric and his generalizations don't apply to all readers.

Ultimately, I think that being able to utilize any treatise on an art form demands that you filter it for the useful bits yourself. If anything, what I liked about it was that it *was* kind of abstract and big-picture-y, and I got that this is his opinion. Sometimes I agreed, sometimes I didn't. But for that exact reason I find the book interesting and useful, unlike all those "how to draw comics" type books, which demand no thought and don't seem to have taken any thought to write.

*eyeroll* They weren't guidelines. The book is an observation on comic art trends and a simplified explanation of the most commonly used visual devices.

Text: I’m glad I knew atou this comic when I read Understanding Comics. A lot of the stuff in UC made me feel like I couldn’t understand comics, since I don’t have a lot of the reactions McCloud keeps saying people naturally have in response to certain styles and tropes. (For instance, I have trouble recognizing faces, so his whole thing about detailed versus detail-light faces makes no sense to me.) Anyway, knowing this comic tramples on all his style guidelines gave me a lot of reassurance.
