You have to take the stuff Scott McCloud says about the emotional meaning of lines with several grains of salt. He's projecting there, and that's not the strongest part of the book. Sadly, people probably repeat that, because it sounds mysterious and deep.

That said, the book is hardly prescriptive when it comes to comics or art in general. He explictly endorses non-linearity and abstraction as part of a multi-dimensional spectrum of cartooning.

This! I think McCloud is really smart about comics but his approach can be esoteric and his generalizations don't apply to all readers.

Ultimately, I think that being able to utilize any treatise on an art form demands that you filter it for the useful bits yourself. If anything, what I liked about it was that it *was* kind of abstract and big-picture-y, and I got that this is his opinion. Sometimes I agreed, sometimes I didn't. But for that exact reason I find the book interesting and useful, unlike all those "how to draw comics" type books, which demand no thought and don't seem to have taken any thought to write.
