Beren/Luthien and Aragorn/Arwen from Tolkien. Epic and yet bittersweet endings for both.

James Potter/Lily Evans Potter

I personally find Eleven/River rather epic.

Actually, come to think of it, I tend to think that tragic or at least bittersweet romances are more epic.

Maybe it's because part of what makes a love story epic is the sense of sacrifice. So for that to happen there's got to be that bittersweetness... and it's kind of rare for there to be *both* the ultimate sacrifice and the happy ending.

That's probably true. And sacrifice is a big button for me, so I'm always going to be drawn to ships that include that aspect.

It's the same for me, but I started this thread in part because I realized that I'm not really such a romance buff, and I just couldn't think of many canon romances that pinged the 'epic' buttons for me.

What this thread is telling me though, among others, is that I need to read the Silmarillion...

You should. It is a hard read, but there are some truly epic parts in it. It made me obsessed with this world in a way LOTR and the Hobbit didn't, even if I love them both too.

:) It's on my shelf, along with a bunch more books that are on my list to get around to. (whereas in the meantime I'm reading terrible Forgotten Realms books because of the boyfriend... maybe a switch to Tolkien is exactly what I need XD)

I definitely appreciate Tolkien's worldbuilding a lot more these days, especially now that I'm doing it myself.

I actually think that the reason Luthien/Beren edges out Arwen/Aragorn is that they do get a happy ending. She may have given up her immortality but I never got the sense that she was sad about that. Sad for her family perhaps. But she and Beren would never be parted. They got to come back to life and live for years and raise a family and see their grandkids.

I think if we got a scene like Arwen in the appendix where Luthien was confronted with the bitterness of mortality, then I might think Luthien's ending was a big tragic. But she just seemed so strong and assured. She went after what she wanted and didn't let things stop her. I always felt like she embraced her choice. Being with Beren clearly was what she wanted. So, them dying together (as it seems) seems very fitting. They're probably still together off in the human afterlife.

At least, that's how I've always read it. :)

I agree with this. Luthien knew what she wanted and never seemed bothered by mortality (which in Tolkien is always seen as a good thing and immortality as something of a curse in some ways). Arwen, on the other hand, did seem bothered by mortality. And Aragorn seemed her sole focus to the point that I'm not sure we ever saw her caring for her children/grandchildren or for the people she was queen over.

Also, I like that Luthien actively reached for her goals. Arwen mostly waited and provided encouragement, which is fine and no longer something I hate, but it doesn't ever feel as epic for me. Luthien is the only person to overpower Sauron. That's kind of a big deal.
