I dunno. The first case that comes to mind is George R.R. Martin, and his age and appearance are nowhere near the biggest problem.

My first thought was 50 Shades. The actual problems with the book are becoming the main talking points, and that's good, but for a while everything I saw about it was "mommy porn" and a lot of laughing and discomfort over older women/women with kids being sexual.

In general, though, if there's a choice between two extremes I'll go with SJWs, at least they're not being serious most of the time.

Do people actually trash on GRRM in this specific way? I thought of him too when I read this secret, but the criticism I've seen directed at him has to do with people perceiving him as actually creepy. I have seen the occasional "fat ugly old man" thing but I've never seen anyone say they actually imagined him while reading his sex scenes.

There was someone around here last year who couldn't stop talking about how Martin was obviously just a gross old pedophile who fantasized about teenage girls all the time. When it was pointed out to them, repeatedly, that he's happily married to a woman his own age, they just replied "Oh, sure he is, but it's obvious he'd RATHER be molesting young girls." Can't argue with that logic.

I'm trying to think but I can only remember the YA authors. Sexy scenes or explicit? Yeah, sadly, people are still going to trash on fat people. I think it was two days ago or so the wankfest on the cosplay secret.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
People do that? That does sound pretty dumb.

ia, and why would you want to? If you are reading about two characters having sex wouldn't it just totally ruin the mood to think of the author at the same time anyway?

I've seen it a couple times...but that's it. I'm probably not hanging out in the 'right' places, but I don't get it either. If you're invested in the characters you shouldn't be thinking about the author during a sex scene. (Maybe some people can't help it, but...that kind of thing never occurs to me.)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK, I can honestly say that I've never seen it, and I'm a veteran in many book fandoms/book fandom communities, so you'd think I'd have at least run across it once or twice by now if it was a widespread thing. Not saying it doesn't happen, just that it seems more likely OP's run into a shitty and immature section of whatever fandom they're in rather than something that goes on in general.

I sometimes see people assuming that just because you write something kinky that you must enjoy it and indulge in it IRL (and the implicit "you were writing this with one hand down your pants weren't you, eww!" correlation), but the people that think that way judge across the board, not just when it comes to the author's appearance.

I keep getting confused at so many people actually knowing what all sorts of authors look like. Most books that I read don't have pictures of the authors and I don't go actively searching for pictures for every author. I don't really care what an author looks like.

But then again, I even sometimes miss who the author is in the first place (like that time I read this vampire novel by George R.R. Martin and only noticed months later who the author was).

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's more the people who don't read these things, but still want to laugh about their existence. They'll use the first insult that pops into their head and, especially for women, that'll probably be about appearance.

WHAT?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, maybe I was a little like that as a young'un. So I guess I understand. But at this point I am a lot heavier than I let on online, and I don't really want to think that gets in the way of people enjoying my stories...and yes I write smut.

Oh no, does it get in the way that way?

Re: WHAT?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope not, but I worry that if people actually know what I look like then they won't like reading my fic.

I was thinking about fic after reading this secret and how there is far less chance of ever knowing what the author looks like than with published fiction and wondering if people actually sit there contemplating the author while reading smut and worrying he or she might be ugly. What a weird thing to do.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
SJW's are hypocrites. They will preach about how everyone is beautiful but when someone doesn't align perfectly with their definition of right they throw around the word 'problematic' and spread hate for the very things they were fighting against.

I see it a lot with the 50 Shades person and the Twilight person and to a lesser extent, GRRM. And while admittedly the sex in all of those makes me uncomfortable and the former two deserve mockery for being terrible writing (at least GRRM's sex scenes are supposed to make you feel uncomfortable), I think there's a difference between that and bashing the author.

Also, writing something != being into that yourself, so you don't even need to picture the author naked if you don't want to.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The Twilight author isn't overweight at all. Do you maybe mean the Mortal Instruments author, Cassandra Clare? I don't know if those books contain any sex scenes, but I do remember hearing a lot of snide remarks about the author's fatness, which I never understood.

I think the only time that bothers me is if someone has an LJ/DW icon that has their face on it and it's linked to some smutty porn fic. It's hard to read that when the icon is sitting there, judging you.

Fuck SJW's in general though.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
It bothers me more if their child is on the icon!

.....who knows what author's look like? I think i know what three authors i read look like, and only because they've won awards and stuff.

Are you talking about published stuff or fan stuff? Because fan stuff - i don't even know if they're male/female/other/an A.I..

Text: I know people like to dump over “SJWs” for being hyper-pearl-clutchy about every goddamn little thing.

But y’all, when I see you dumping over non-conventionally-attractive authors for writing sex scenes and ablooblooing about how ZOMG it’s so terrible reading them b/c oh the pain of imagining the author writing them?

Yeah, that’s just fucking fatphobic and shitty too.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well, sad thing is book fandoms are just like everything else. When something gets popular, then people who either don't like it or are just too awesome for popular things need to express more than just "I don't like this." They have to explain how weird and awful and *wrong* the people who do like it are. And for some reason, the author being fat and also having the temerity to write sex scenes is a go-to for some groups. (Or even if they don't write sex. Or even if they're not fat, they just aren't conventionally beautiful, if they're women).

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
can I still judge Cassandra Clare for always sitting like an open-legged slob about to give birth on the floor every time she appears in public

Only if I can still judge you for caring about such a stupid thing.

(Seriously, how someone SITS? Come on. At least claim she eats puppies or something.)
