Stop at the first one. It has a kind of semi-charming low-budget vibe to it, when it was made with the idea that a big, female-dominated YA book fandom wasn't really going to affect the movie. I guess I mean to say it's far less self-conscious than it could have been.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The movies aren't works of art or anything but they're still 100 times better than the books (ngl though, I do actually like the books because they're hilarious and stupid in a fun way imo), so I can understand why you like the first film. I think the directors did pretty much the best job they could with adapting the books and the movies were entertaining enough. Plus, they all had pretty good soundtracks. I don't think there's anything wrong with liking things like this; it's not like you're pumped to get out there and find a dude who's exactly like Edward or anything.

Eh, I liked the movies despite never having read the books and generally not being a big romance-genre fan. Most big movies are dumb-fun, try not to let general opinion bother you.

I actually like the last one. My roommate "forced" me to watch these with her and it's the only one I've voluntarily watched more than once.

I ended up watching one because it was my sister's birthday and we arranged a trip to the cinema as a present and she picked Twilight to watch. She was really into them, but I honestly had only the vaguest idea what they were about before I went in. I actually kind of enjoyed it? I can't remember which one it was, the one with the baseball game in it? I mean, I had bugger all idea what was happening, and thought Crystal McMopey and the heroine were the most boring characters in it, but the big vamp fight was cool and the dad vamp was hot and kinda cool, and all in all I came out of it rather entertained, if not necessarily enlightened. It was fun.

no shade, no shame.

I actually like the twilight movies. the romance is pretty stupid and both main characters are boring as hell, but the soundtracks are very good, the landscapes are pretty, and there are some attractive side characters that I find pretty enjoyable.

the writing in the books is absolutely horrid, and they're as boring as dry dog shit. but I think the movies did as well as they could with the source material being what it is.

I watched it with friends for laughs. And they were good laughs.

...Yeah, I don't mean to sound like a Cool Kid but I saw the first movie in the theater and really thought it was remarkably bad.

But more power to you OP. I mean, I like The Haunted Mansion. That's bad right?

I think it's because the movie has to file off the worst of the stalkerishly creepy crap Edward gets up to, and make Bella a more active character as well.

They did a good job of giving the first movie a plot! Which the book does not have!

I think 2 and 3 are skippable, but the two Breaking Dawn movies are legit amazing, in a totally bonkers way.

Not having to listen to Bella's rather whiny interior monologues goes a long way too.

If you like that then try watching 50 Shades of Gray. :D

Come to think of it, the appeal of the movies for me was that they weren't weirdly sexual. Even the last one had a sex scene but it wasn't as uncomfortable as they tend to be, possibly because it was ridiculous (and the movie seemed to treat it as such.)

It could be part of the overall feeling of awkwardness they have, the MP especially, but everyone seems really uncomfortable with each other without slipping into cringe comedy.

That's odd. Edward's stalkerish behavior seemed really sexually weird. Watching someone a hundred years younger than yourself sleep is disturbing. But it's been forever since I read those stupid books so maybe I'm misremembering something.

Yeah, that watching Bella sleep thing -_-

It's one thing if the people involved are in a pretty healthy relationship, but Edward's with Bella is anything but. He can appear uninvited in front of her at any time, he's shown controlling tendencies (like removing the engine from her car to keep her from leaving him), and so on - so the context matters: him watching her sleep is indeed creepy.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It got even creepier for me when I found out the leaked POV book had him oiling her window to make it creek less. *shudder*

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
You might still like 50 Shades then. It's a weirdly unsexy movie, given the subject matter.

I think part of what made the books horrible is that you're privy to Bella's every boring, childish thought; they're terribly written as well. When you're watching the movie you can tune out for a bit when it gets boring again.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Don't be ashamed, the movies really are fun to watch, even if mostly to laugh at them. Also, I really love the Pacific Northwest aesthetic.

If you can get all the way to the last movie (Breaking Dawn part 2), it is, I kid you not, one of the best bad movies I've seen. Just batshit crazy and hilarious from start to finish. I'd recommend it to any bad movie fan.

Text: N!S: I read the first book and hated it. I hate this series with a burning passion and will forever rant about them and the stalker that is Edward. I’ve alwys refused to see the movies.

S!: A friend recently invited me over and really wanted to watch the first movie. I genuinely enjoyed it. Help. It feels so wrong. I acan’t decide if I’m willing to see the other movies, but the first one was fun.

I find Kstew ridiculously attractive...

But that actually has nothing to do with the fact that I did genuinely enjoy the movies. They were very pretty, had good music, and I was entertained. No complaints!
