Calling the black character a queen is racist by no definition I know

Ah, whatever, I don't know the fandom, maybe they really are as crazy as everyone says. Still, I think it's hard to isolate what's just general fan craziness, and what's specifically racist.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say it's racist, but I think it's putting characters on pedestals which, to me, is kind of fetishizing and dehumanizing.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure sure.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this agreement or sarcastic dismissiveness?

I promise I'm not trolling or trying to start shit or anything. I'm just having a hard time telling it apart because there's no body language or any other indicators attached.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, it was just neutral agreement. I understand, the Internet is tough sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK, that assumes that people are saying that Abby is a queen because she's black. She isn't. She's a queen because she's ABBY, and Abby is fucking awesome.

By the same token, most people don't hate Katrina because she's white. They hate her because she's a poorly-written character who tanked the ratings to the extent that a third season might not happen.

I get liking a character, but from what I've seen, when characters get called "Queens" they're usually put on a pedestal and it becomes impossible to discuss character flaws or different interpretations of the character without being yelled at. It's dehumanizing because, at the end of the day, Abbie is a woman -- with strengths and character and failings and pet peeves like everyone else. And to deny that is to basically strip her of three dimensional characterization.

In regards to Katrina, I get not liking her, but sometimes that dislike coated in misogyny -- calling her a cow or a bitch or utterly useless. Instead of analyzing what the writers did wrong with her and how it could be better. Or how her scenes fell flat and failed to accomplish anything.

Discussing how she's poorly written isn't the issue. It's the misogyny that's often lobbed in there.

And then there's the fact that, on top of that, I've seen people who say black female characters aren't well-written get accused of misogynoir by the same people who call Katrina useless and poorly written. Whereas saying the same thing about white Katrina is given a pass.

Just a quibble, but a poorly-written character doesn't tank ratings. A poorly written series may tank ratings. Poor writing may tank ratings. But blaming rating woes specifically on the character seems a bit wrong-headed.

I mean, I don't care for Castiel in SPN. But I wouldn't say Castiel is the reason I don't watch any more. I found the writing in general went downhill.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Katrina the character did not tank the ratings. The shitty writing tanked the ratings. To blame it all on one character is ridiculous.

Most of the complaints I've seen outside of tumblr (and even there) is that everyone being is written terribly.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not racist. It's overcompensating. It's how you can tell the people doing it are very young.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That would entirely depend on context, since in some political circles the "Welfare" in the front would be implied.

Of course, I don't know the fandom either, so whatever.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's definitely a totally different context, but fair point I guess

I don't think that's what the secret poster is saying.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think they are saying that SJWs call out people for treating black characters the same as the SJWs are treating Katrina, while saying it's okay because Katrina is white and Abbie is black. Of course, that ignores the misogyny (setting them up as competition, having to tear one down at all, spewing character hate because one is in a relationship with the guy they want the other one with, etc.). And, yeah that's generally part of rabid shippers, but the vitriol that gets directed at certain female characters can be shocking
