Honestly, I've never been made to feel worse about my race (online at least, though this in no way compares to real life) than by the people being discussed in your secret OP.

(Not white, but I am white passing Middle-Eastern and some people were so dismissive and condescending that I felt enormously alienated).

It's kind of like "screw feminism; I'm an egalitarian!" It often ends up coming from a place of not being comfortable with complete gender equality (for example, still wanting to put everyone into traditional gender roles, even if they're all for sociopolitical equality) and latching onto their idea of feminism as represented by feminist extremists or their perceived version of man-hatin' feminism.

Yo this. In my experience at least, equalitarians are the kind of people who constantly bring up the "but what about men?!" argument whenever possible no matter how little sense it makes, but when actual male issues come up like rape or unhealthy social norms, they'll just ignore it or make jokes or accuse all feminists of bring evil harpies and never so anything productive.

Ah, whatever, I don't know the fandom, maybe they really are as crazy as everyone says. Still, I think it's hard to isolate what's just general fan craziness, and what's specifically racist.

That would entirely depend on context, since in some political circles the "Welfare" in the front would be implied.

I think they are saying that SJWs call out people for treating black characters the same as the SJWs are treating Katrina, while saying it's okay because Katrina is white and Abbie is black. Of course, that ignores the misogyny (setting them up as competition, having to tear one down at all, spewing character hate because one is in a relationship with the guy they want the other one with, etc.). And, yeah that's generally part of rabid shippers, but the vitriol that gets directed at certain female characters can be shocking

Without context it's hard to tell if the comparison is decent. Are these two characters similar? Is the white one judged more harshly for doing something that the black one also did?

Sometimes people are easier on one group without realizing it, so when a member of that group does something terrible, it's directly compared to a lesser crime committed by someone from another group. It's not necessarily your fault, but it's something to watch in yourself as well as others.

I really hate both. A for putting women down (especially with gendered insults) and B for putting women on pedestals (which denies them their humanity).

It's more sexist than racist. Calling a female character misogynistic names is the worst thing you can do in fandom... unless you're doing it to a white female character in order to uplift another female character who's a POC. Then not only is it fine, it's encouraged. By the same people who harass you for doing it under any other circumstances.

I have seen (some) people mention Katrina's race in a way that makes me uncomfortable, but honestly...I feel like a lot of people dislike her because they don't like what the writers (and to a lesser extent, the actress) did with the character.

I imagine some Ichabod/Abbie shippers hate her too (outside of just not finding her character well written or whatever), but shippers hating on characters they feel 'threaten' their ship isn't exactly a new phenomenon. Maybe race has a hand in it, but from what I've seen it isn't a massive one.

I was so hoping Abbey and Katrina would become friends. That Abbey would roll out the welcome wagon for Katrina. It would have been SO much better if they'd handled it that way.

I'm an Ichabod/Abbie shipper and naturally I love Abbie but I'm not into the way even entertainment sites set the two characters up as rivals. You don't have to tear one character down to appreciate the other. Of course, I'm not into putting characters on pedestals either and that mentality is huge among fans like that.
