What about extremist egalitarians?

I'm being serious here. There are self-proclaimed egalitarians who act like dicks...just like members of EVERY MAJOR POLITICAL MOVEMENT EVER.

Why do people insist on defining a group by its extremists? >____>

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was kind of thinking this.

If you insist on dissociating from every movement that has terrible extremists, you're left with pretty much no one to associate with.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
But out of all three groups, egalitarians have the least shitty rep.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
with you, maybe

that's seriously the most subjective argument ever duder

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Egalitarians have the least shitty rep in the sense that, as fence-sitters who aren't informed about EITHER of the ideologies they want to opt out of, they are merely ineffectual rather than dangerous.

Hm.

These groups have really different reps with really different audiences. Feminists, for example, have a really bad rap with a lot of people...who are sexist and conservative. I don't know if it's possible to determine in a neutral way which one is the "best" according to the opinion of level-headed, non-bigoted people (presumably the people whose opinions should matter here).

Besides, why would you want to choose an ideology based on its reputation and not its actual tenets?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm female and liberal. I am also not a feminist. I choose that because I don't believe in many of feminisms tenets* AND reputations.

*many of those tenets are from the extreme feminists. I don't want to be associated with them. hence, I am not a feminist.

I still believe in equality for women AND men. i don't think feminism is the way to go to achieve this.

i sort of alternate between calling myself one or not. I'm currently part of an online feminist discussion group...and it just shows to me that really there are some many things in third wave feminism I just do not agree with.

If a feminist is " a person who believes in equality between men an women" then sure, i am one.

But I honestly do not know if you can reduce a movement to one catch phrase. If roughly half of what a movement promotes is not something you can get behind, is it still something you can truly identify as?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way and I'm actually really struggling with this. I was raised as a feminist, as much as that's possible - my mum was very active in the community in the late 70's and early 80's and she always held feminist ideals highly. She was very pro-equality. This is how I feel as well. This third wave feminism is something that really angers me, because I feel like it's giving feminism is it's supposed to be a really bad name. But then I suppose there were always extremists, they just weren't as visible to me as they are now. I call myself a feminist, I identify as a feminist, but I have a hard time not being resentful towards the people who ruined the word feminist for so many.

Isn't it funny that all these "Women" are literally always anon

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
sure is

i can't get over that on a primarily anonymous community where most of the community is female, there's anons that claim they're "women"

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it funny that all these "women who disagree with the fake anon women" are literally always anon?

This comment partly makes sense but rejecting mainstream tenets because they are actually extremists tenets doesn't. Just say it's because you don't want the reputation if that's the reason.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. My problem with the "you should not call yourself egalitarian, you MUST call yourself a feminist if you agree with wanting equality for all people or else you are doing it wrong and are a misogynist". Why is it so hard to understand that some people might not want to use a certain label for several reasons and choose another one instead? The way some people keep going on trying to pressure everyone into saying they're a feminists is getting very annoying.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-15 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll be honest, I get not wanting to be associated with the extremists, but it makes me so damn sad to see the label be lost to them.

Particularly because the women we owe so much to -- the women who got us the right to vote and fought for equal pay -- called themselves feminists.

I just don't want to see it lost.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
This so much.

I mean. I don't think you should pressure someone into a label, at all, that's just a bad idea for several reasons.

But I'm not going to pretend it doesn't annoy men when people go around parroting basically wrong ideas about what feminism is because they chose to listen to extremists - people other feminists actively decry as extremists - and reject feminism for that reason.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
This. It doesn't help that 90% of the time those people are quite happy to ignore similar problems in their own movements/groups... or claim it doesn't count, because - unlike feminists who don't get that "extremists" are actually also feminists and thus totally representative of all feminists - these are ACTUAL extremists and not part of [insert group/movement they're part of], so it's completely unfair to reject them just because of that.

I mean, I don't label myself as feminist either, but that's after educating myself about the current wave and I sure as hell won't label myself egalitarian.

Because by pointing at the extremists and claiming they speak for Group A, Group B is able to silence their opposition by wrongly defining what Group A stands for. "Well, your own party member said such and such so there!"

(Anonymous) 2015-03-16 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
But God help you if you point out Group A also does it...

"It doesn't count! Unlike you, ours are just extremist/no real scotsman! And you're not decrying yours. At least not enough!"

"Dude, can you stop moving the goalposts?"

"We're not moving them, you're moving them!"

And then extrimists from all sides jump in and the goal posts end up everywhere and the reasonable ones flee the playing field before they get hit by said poles.
