she's not poc or biracial, her father is classic 1/16 fetishing white-man-who-bought-his-way-in to a stereotype so he could feel ~ exotic ~

but keep on dismissing legit criticism

SOURCE?

Because her father has a Native American name and worked as a shaman.

So, you know, you might want to not erase someone's identity because it's inconvenient for you to bitch about a show.

Those who deny or try to reduce other's NA ancestry to fractions usually aren't even Ndn themselves.

Look, man, I'm a quarter Mexican and it doesn't mean I'm a representative of the Hispanic race. Sometimes the margin of whatever you are is not enough to mean anything.

well, no-one is representative of a whole race. That notion in itself is sort of silly.

NA, FA, Ndn, have been systematically having their identity erased or policed. Many tribes recognize no matter the mixing, such as the Hayley's father, but others outside of tribes deny ndn people's existence.

Other people dictating that mixture doesn't matter is fucking bullshit.

This. I'm 1/8, but I rarely talk about it because I get piled on by white people because obvs I'm just a "Cherokee princess". It seems that if you're not "full blood" or on the rolls (and my family made a fuckload of sacrifices to avoid being put on the rolls), then you're not a "real" Native American and should just shut up (and let the white people talk). For an example, I've seen people throw shit at the woman who runs the Native Appropriations blog because she doesn't "look" Native; apparently, if you can pass as white, you're obviously a liar and have no place in Native activism. Whereas the actual activists like Idle No More encourage people, including those of other races, to participate.

It's racist as fuck, and it's almost entirely from white people. Speaking as someone who knows in excruciating the history of what white people did to my ancestors, this infuriates me. It's another form of oppression, from people who claim to be anti-racism and "on our side". Thanks, but no thanks; we don't need your "protection."

Thank you for your comment. You had a lot of what I didn't think to. I'm 1/4 and my family wasn't on any rolls - my grandfather left as a child and refused to go back until much later in his life. There's actually a small native pop here from those that gtfo in the 60s. My point, people used to avoid being attached to their tribe, and it's all part of others and the dictation of identity. It was "better" that way.

I haven't been on the Native Appropriations blog for a while because of the hate when I think a guy used to run it? He was Cherokee, part of the Nation if I remember correctly, and spoke the language fluently, but there was always assholes that couldn't let it rest he was blond.

Idle No More is wonderful for how it managed to grow but also for being so inclusive. I'm bitter because it has been largerly ignored by Tumblr, but that doesn't surprise me.

Spekaign as non-American, it's funny to hear you talk about "white people" when you're apparently 7/8 white yourself. Those terible white people who did all those awful things to "your ancestors" Majority of your ancestors were them. Maybe people would take your NA descent more seriously, if you acknowledged that fact instead of acting like you and your ancestors have nothing in common with those horrible, horrible white people.

1/8 means a grandparent that is half, and that's more than enough for cultural exposure, regardless of being on a roll. Americans have our blanket culture and sometimes, variants on it at home. although I see your point about about recognizing the acts of white ancestors don't negate the ndn identity or cultural influence.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-17 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't doubt her exposure (although I often correct Americans of my ethnic ancestry on the misunderstood, or completely wrong facts about my culture, that they absorbed through similar means), I'm just doubting the fact that she had no exposure to the culture of her other 3 grandparents, so hearing her rant about white people as if from the perspective of an outsider sounds a bit performative to me.

I didn't actually have contact with any of my grandparents (unless you count the total of two times I met my maternal grandmother, who physically abused myself and my sister, and we never saw her again); the woman I called my Grandmother wasn't related; she "adopted" my Mom. My dad was very close with his Eastern Cherokee grandfather, who passed on his culture, and in turn, my Dad passed it to me.

Mom had very little interest in passing down her culture, so I know very little of that side of the family beyond the aunts and uncles and some cousins; most of my cultural exposure was to my Cherokee side.

And what I was "ranting" about was the Tumblr SJW types who are white with no Native American heritage who tell people with Native American heritage to STFU based on blood quantum, their skin color, or whether they're on the rolls. That's white people setting themselves up as gatekeepers for who is allowed to talk on certain issues, when they themselves have no connection to the culture in question. If you can't see how that's an issue, then I honestly don't know what to say.

*sigh*

This is something I am very much aware of, and I normally mention. However, I did not go into it in my original comment because it was beside the point of the way Tumblr-esque SJWs treat anyone with Native American blood who doesn't "look" like a stereotypical "Indian". I also opted to not go into it for purposes of not turning my comment into TLDR. Also, it was late and I was tired. But everything I have said about the treatment of Native Americans/First Nations by SJWs is true.

And you're sort of doing it here too -- it's coming across like you think I don't have a right to speak about how white people treat Native Americans based on skin color or blood quantum -- I have white ancestry along with my Native ancestry, STFU. If you can't see how it is a problem that someone who has no Native American blood (I've seen it most from white people, but I'm sure others do it too) acts as judge of who can or cannot speak about matters affecting Native Americans, when they have no connection whatsoever... that's a problem, and it's a form of oppression, because many, many Native Americans do have white heritage as well. That's the point I was trying to make. My white ancestry doesn't especially matter to that point, except in regards to inter-tribe discussions (ie, I'm not going to speak over someone who has spent their life on a rez, etc).

I am, probably more than most, especially aware of the issues with ancestry, as my ancestors on my mother's side came to the Americas on one of the first three ships (I don't think it was the Mayflower, but I can't remember for sure which one). So yes, I am quite aware that my other ancestors were hell-bent on genocide.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-17 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
And people who advocate SJ and discuss it wonder why white people feel like they get shat on no matter what they do.

Hint - maybe lay off the fucking buzzwords and actually do some research first instead of the default white-people-all-100%-suck-all-the-time narrative.
