It is probably a reaction to the phase of clean-shavenness. But really, it is just like any other fashion fad, in that some people get overly invested in it.

But it's okay to not like beards! It's okay to not have a beard! I am reaping the benefits of beard mania, though, I admit.

I haven't seen the behavior OP is describing (And find it silly), but yes, all of this.
