Beard "activists"

(Anonymous) 2015-03-17 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Why are beards such a "thing" these days? I don't mean "why are they popular," as I'm aware that trends change all the time, but rather, why have they become a thing to make a big deal out of now?

My father and other male relatives have or had beards, and never made a big fuss about them. They never talked about them at all, much less put down guys who chose to be clean-shaven or tried to act like they were oppressed for having them.

Now, though... it's all "Real Men have beards!!!" "Real women like beards!" "What do you call a man without a beard? A woman!" and stuff like no shaving in November, and men who don't have facial hair are "pussies" and no woman should dare to prefer clean-shaven men. It's become such an obnoxious macho thing.

I can't imagine why anyone cares so much....that's weird.

Haha, you must be the anon who replied to the Beard Appreciation Society comment with a complaint that they're trying to act like everyone should. Might want to cut back on the caffeine, nonny.

I have never heard a large movement of "Real Men have beards!!!" "Real women like beards!" "What do you call a man without a beard? A woman!". Sure, there might be one or two people who think that, but it isn't the norm.

And no shaving in November is about bringing awareness to prostate cancer in a visible and fun way.

I don't think the important of beards is a big of a deal as you are making it out to be. That seems to be on you.

Eh, I see it on facebook all the time. (I'm not the OP)

I have never even heard of this?

You sound like a troll, friend.

Re: Beard "activists"

(Anonymous) 2015-03-17 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's a reaction to the metrosexual/super groomed men trend with a small dash of secret homophobia thrown in.

Maybe they mean the slang version, as in a man with a partner. I only know that from the Doctor Who episode when 10 describes the Master as to having a wife somehow went into 'losing a beard'. I haven't google-facted checked myself on this though.

I've never seen anyone acting like they're oppressed for having a beard. LOL at you though.

Beats me. Beards are ok on some guys, but 9 times out of 10 they just make me think of dirty hipsters with skinny jeans who spend their free time naval gazing.

That too will pass, when the hipster goes away and some other creature takes its place.

It's just a damn fad, and it will likely pass again.

It is probably a reaction to the phase of clean-shavenness. But really, it is just like any other fashion fad, in that some people get overly invested in it.

But it's okay to not like beards! It's okay to not have a beard! I am reaping the benefits of beard mania, though, I admit.

I haven't seen the behavior OP is describing (And find it silly), but yes, all of this.

... Especially with the beard appreciation. What a sexy, sexy icon you've got there.

I have never seen this irl. Maybe this is some kind of online phenomenon, but nobody is beard-shaming anyone else where I live.

Re: Beard "activists"

(Anonymous) 2015-03-18 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I haven't really seen anyone making a big deal out of them.

But I suspect the surge in popularity has something to do with the fact that in the 90s and 00s beards were massively un-fashionable to the point where I knew a lot of girls who thought they were (real examples) "disgusting" and "obviously filthy."

omg I thought you meant the other kind of beard until I got to this part; guys who chose to be clean-shaven

I need some sleep.

One of the flaws of the internet is that you can find a person being a dick about anything.

Huh, never saw this kind of thing. Then again, here in Malaysia beards are seen more of a personal choice due to ethnic/cultural/religious reasons among everyone here (One perk of living in a strong multicultural country: it presents you some side options to-opt in or opt-out of doing stuff).

Me, I shave my beard and mustache every time it grows long. I respect them, but I don't want to look like an ustaz (Malay Muslim teacher) at 21, thank you very much.

boy, I don't know where everyone else hangs out online, because I see that shit all the time (geeks on facebook mostly) and it drives me batty. mostly because I hate beards as it is, so anyone behaving superior about their ugly beard...you do the math.

I really do hate beards. Because they're never nicely-trimmed or kept, they're always the scraggly mountain-man look, the 2010's version of dreadlocks. Unwashed, unkempt, graying at the ends like you've been dragging it in the mud and then looming over your campfire too long. UGH. Ugh ugh ugh. Whatever happened to goatees? I love goatees.

Now, though... it's all "Real Men have beards!!!" "Real women like beards!" "What do you call a man without a beard? A woman!"

I haven't heard any of that. Yikes.

I do find the "beards beards beards!!!" thing a little tiring sometimes but I mostly ignore it. I don't care for beards; stubble is nice but full-on beards don't do it for me. However, other people have different tastes and that's OK.

I don't know about other people, but my beard apprication tends to be directly related to Fandom. Like The Hobbit - lots of beards, or Dragon Age - mmm, Duncan (though not Blackwall, his looks fake).
