Maybe it's because these children's cartoons had the prefect set of fun, danger, intrigue, and open spaces for fan constructs that it becomes supremely popular with grown adults? I know I had my share of fanboy-ness when Phineas and Ferb was the most popular thing.

But never heard of Steven Universe before, mainly due to the cartoon channels being cut off from our cable service. Is it any good?

It's honestly awesome.

The first few episodes are a bit more cliche, but it finds it's footing quickly, and also while the protagonist starts out annoying, he starts growing up fast.

I did a quick blurb just above you, but slightly longer one for you!

A long time ago, sentient mineral aliens came to earth, for reasons the series will slowly reveal. Their leader fell in love, and had a child, something unprecedented which left the "Crystal Gems" without a leader, and something their race had never even experienced before. Steven, the first hybrid and first Gem that actually has to grow up,

Steven experiences being a child with slowly emerging powers being rasied by a dad that hasn't really recovered from the loss of his lover and what amounts to 3 surrogate sisters who have no idea what they are doing on the child-rearing end but are pretty good at defending a planet from various alien dooms.

Rebecca Sugar, who did a lot of the music for Adventure Time, left that show to do this. So far it's agreed she made a good choice.
