I sympathize with this. Theoretically, I would love to write 1920s mob stories, but the research and tone combinations escape me, so I stick with my relatively safe fluffy stuff. It's sad. :(

Seriously. Make a sock and post it under that and just... go at it. Write what you want to write and have fun.

In the meantime, if you want to improve tone then read a load of noir stories and watch films set around the theme.

Immerse yourself in similar things to the tone you want to achieve, and just go for it.

OMG no, anon, do it! The stories that try to break out of that mould never seem to get as much attention, it's true. But seriously, just do it. Fuck everyone else. Why limit yourself?

If you really feel uncomfortable then why not make a separate account with a pseudonym to post them under. Then there's no connection to yourself. And hey, if there's anyone like me in your fandom then reading something that tries to stretch the boundaries a bit will make their whole damn week. The trite cliched stuff that is fandom's bread and butter gets really boring after a while.

I'm so with you there. Which is why I tend to only write porn. I can't do super plotty stuff, I don't have extended headcanons... I just can't.

You could make an alternate penname and e-mail account to publish those stories.

Then, if people hate on you, you can ignore it, and if they leave actual constructive criticism, you can take note without feeling embarrassed later on because it's not your main account.

Text: When I try to write more experimental/challenging (to write, not to read) fic, I feel like I’m ‘stepping out of my place’.

I love reading fannnish meta about canon, fanwork, and fandom. But they reminded me how far I am from being able to express myself the way I want to. The only thing I seem “meant for” right now is writing the kind of stuff my 14y.o. self could have, if I had been productive at that age.
