They posted their reviews to the fics themselves (at least on AO3, I don't know if any other archives were involved).

Writers only realized what was going on when several people had gotten these random reviews that usually started off with "I don't know what you're writing about but..." (which would red flag any fic writer to wonder why someone was reading their work in the first place then?) and the student who'd organized the whole thing admitted she'd 'assigned' these fanfics to her students to review for the class.

The icing on the cake is that the class was about kink fic.

...disturbing.

What, academic discussions of sexuality aren't allowed?

Okay that does sound kind of obnoxious. "I have no idea what you're writing about but I'm going to rip into it anyway."

Also tbh the "it's on the internet, you should expect people to complain if they don't like it" argument feels like the equivalent of "well she left the house in that tacky outfit, she had too expect someone would say something about it."

Which IMO is "self entitled' all on its own. "I have to look at it, so you should listen to my criticism about it. What? No you HAVE to take it"

Why do people think it's okay to act in obnoxious ways and wave their super special opinion around on the internet because 'it's the internet'. Congrats , you've just proved that when you have nothing to stop you or stand in your way, you become an obnoxious ass.

I did not realize that they were actually posting them to the authors.

That makes the whole kerfuluffle make a LOT of sense.

It's the difference between me and a friend quietly rolling our eyes at the way some random stranger dresses, and me going up to said stranger and saying "You might not realize it, but chartreuse doesn't do you any favors, and also you probably should reconsider the plaid leggings if you actually plan on going where other people can see you."

There was a reason why communities like GAFF (GodAwful FanFic, for those too young to remember, and oh dear, I'm about one step away from shaking my e-cane and telling those damn kids to get off my virtual lawn, aren't I?) had strict policies about NOT telling the original authors that they had been sporked.

Why would the teacher of the class even think that was a good idea?

It's not the same thing at all. You can't say that art people create is the same thing as what they're wearing on the street.

Have you actually read the reviews that were left? There was ONE troll and the rest were quite reasonable and mild, and the author got in a pissy fit about it, saying "it's fanfic custom not to leave any criticism unless solicited!" What? Since when has that been the rule?
