ok I'm going to be honest here and I might get some hate, but

I do my best to listen to people who are in oppressed groups I'm not in (which is most of them), and I don't talk over them or try to talk for them. I get that the occasional "I hate white people" or whatever is...well, I may not understand where it comes from (I'm not a feminist of the "I hate men" type, for example) but it doesn't really bother me because it's harmless to me and doesn't affect my life in any way.

But I don't feel like I'm obligated to listen to a person who is actively wishing horrific violence on myself or a group of people that includes me (or, for that matter, any group of people at all). If you want me to die in a fire, I'm not going to engage with you. I'm not going to return the sentiment either, of course; I'm probably just going to walk away. Because no, I'm not comfortable with that, and no, I don't think I did anything to merit that level of hatred nor to merit any of the violence you (general you) may wish upon me.

I'm all for checking my privilege and working towards equality even if it means giving up privilege that I have. But I don't have to stand here and take that level of vitriol for any reason.

Yeah, that's pretty much my experience and opinion. I also notice with that type of person that they will ignore/shit on other marginalised people, which is why SJ on tumblr is pretty self-defeating.

They're promoting one thing in theory and doing the exact fucking opposite in practice.

Yep, when you see people mocking mentally disabled people and PTSD sufferers because they are white, you know you really can't support that shit at all. As for the eye for an eye stuff, I've been through that shit, I've DONE enough of that shit and I know how useless, dangerous and depressing it is.

Pretty much this. I'll understand the occasional "I hate men," "I hate straight people," etc, because goddess knows there are times I have just read too many men being horrible people things. But... I'm not down with wishing severe violence upon an entire group of people because of the actions of some of them. I'm just not. If they limit to, "If you're one of the people doing XYZ horrible thing, I hope you DIAF", okay, that doesn't bother me. But everyone? No. Not cool.

I think it's important to educate onesself about important social issues, but everyone has to start somewhere, and I've seen far too often this type of reaction come from someone who's ignorant and trying (sometimes in wince-worthy ways, but trying) to understand. It's why I personally am so intent on education in the areas that I'm marginalized (disabled, mentally ill, autistic, queer, not-entirely-cis-but-damned-if-there's-a-word-for-me, Native issues, though I talk about that the least due to people being racist assholes deciding whether or not you're a "real" Native person based on looks, tribal enrollment, and blood quantum), because there are a lot of ignorant people out there, and I can usually explain things in a way that they "get."

But it's hard to educate onesself if you're constantly running into vitriol, threats of violence, and hatred. Most are more likely to back the fuck out and say, "Nope." Which makes me so angry at the people that do these things, because education is fucking important. Argh.

That's pretty much my stance. I understand the frustration but if there is going to be cooperation then don't bite off the head of someone who wants to help the cause in what way they can. There are enough legit racist scum to aim hatred towards, so why is there so much hate towards the people who are sympathetic and trying to do the right thing? Isn't the fight against racism to destroy generalizations based on skin color and promote equality?

People still fighting ignorance and hate with more ignorance and hate, nothing good can come out of this.
