Now that I think about it, I've literally never heard anyone say "die cis scum" unless they were purposely being sarcastic or ironic. Why does everyone here act like it's an incredibly common saying.

In some sectors of fandom [and the internet in general, really] it isn't being said sarcastically or ironically - and typically those sectors make that *very* clear.

Wait, that's not actually a good analogy at all. It's like... a black hole? A whale? No, I know what analogy I want! It's like the blind men and the elephant. IE, everyone makes all these claims about what it is and how it behaves, but necessarily (since it's such a massive site) those claims are based on a very narrow slice of the activity on the site, and so you end up with these wildly divergent views. And they're actually impossible to reconcile, because in this world, everyone is blind, and there's no one-eyed man to be king.

You're right. It really has nothing to do with the platform. It's people.

There are probably people saying intelligent things about social justice on tumblr, but some folk would rather go on about the assinine ones because that's a lot more fun and easier than taking the time to think about things in depth and question ourselves and what we think seems obvious.

This, seriously. I've seen posts claiming shit like Meghan Trainor "erased black woman" by saying "I'm bringing booty back".

Like, when you've reached the point where you're making those kinds of comments or agreeing with them you just need to take a step back and really think about the things that matter in life. Eventually you'll realise that the direction in which some chubby white woman claims to be bringing the booty is not one of them, and it does not in fact "erase" anything.

Yeah, there is a lot of people mocking the extremists on tumblr. Faith in humanity restored a little.

Your lucky to have never come across it, but I have seen it said seriously. A lot. For some people the only way to fight oppression is to make everyone else feel like subhuman scum. It's just revenge instead of justice.

I can get passionate about SJ issues myself but I would never wish death or harm on anyone. Period. Call me idealistic, but I believe that a lot of people are just ignorant and need to be educated about issues. I get super uncomfortable when people first solution is wanting to 'ruin someones life' or bring harm to them. People let their rage drive them and it ends up hurting more people.
