Somebody on Tumblr asked me to help them write a secret that should come up next week and it hit on a headcanon I happened to share. (Btw, I'm on the spectrum myself, so I'm not just whipping this up out of nowhere.)

Ever since I saw Guardians of the Galaxy, I want to say Groot just screams "autistic" to me, so it's my headcanon that the entire Flora Colossus species is autistic. Like, it's their normal neurology. They're the more 'classic' sort and are mostly nonverbal, but still communicate in their own way. Drax could also be autistic, but he comes off more like an Aspie than anything.

I also like to say Reginald Barclay from Star Trek: TNG could be on the spectrum as well. Likely Asperger's or PDDNOS. I think pre-emotion-chip Data fits as an autistic-coded character purely because he's so baffled by some social situations and misses social cues.

I always kinda figured Ed from Ed, Edd n Eddy was autistic, maybe because he reminds me a little of my brother.

To avoid any possible wank, can we clarify that everyone here agrees and acknowledges that these are headcanons and not canon?

Nathan Hale from the Resistance series. It's not just that he's a silent protagonist in a game full of speaking characters... it's also that some of the decisions he makes and the way other characters react to him seems like he has some mild autism spectrum disorder.

This is really the only character we have collectively headcanoned as being autistic though.

I made a secret about Tom Hardy's character in The Drop. But the thread got highjacked for an argument about autism vs aspergers. : /

Well, if certain people didn't insist that being on the spectrum meant you had more in common with an extreme autism case than with "allistic"--oh, wait, never mind.

Yeah, I may have contributed to that, I don't remember. I know I read the wank. I honestly hadn't seen the movie, so I had nothing to say about the character.

I meant to fit an, "I'm sorry about that," in there, honest!

I tend to be very choosy about headcanoning characters as autistic, even though I'm on the spectrum myself.

I sorta see Lilo from Lilo and Stitch that way, because she reminds me of how I was when I was a kid. She consider's Mertle and co her 'friends' even though they tease her, she has a very fixated interest and shows trouble relating to other kids. It's just a headcanon though.

Also I sorta like the theory that Luna Lovegood has Asperger's, because I really related to her and her situation and she does have some of the symptoms. Several times she is brutally honest, to the point of being blunt or rude, for one thing. And the magical creatures she believes in could be her focused interest. plus the idea that a student at Hogwarts can be on the spectrum just makes me sort of happy.

Those are really the only ones.

Haru from Free! strikes me as such, mostly because he reminds me very very much of a dear friend of mine that happens to be autistic.

I found that Pride and Prejudice read a lot better once I accepted Aspie!Darcy as my headcanon. I think of it as something that runs in the Fitzwilliam side of the family, as IMO Lady Catherine also qualifies as a likely candidate. YMMV of course.

Oh man, there was one I read that I enjoyed but it was a few years ago. An anon on FS linked it to me (if you're around and this rings a bell anon). I think it was just a one shot so I'm struggling for something to narrow down my search.

Edit: haven't found it yet, but i vaguely recall something about the front door being important and petunia at her wits end on trying to help harry. I think snape got involved somehow and made her tea, got her in touch with some muggle support groups. Was just a nice one shot i think

What's wrong with this? Slash isn't just a straight-girl driven phenomena; it's often written or enjoyed by queer people who see subtext and want to feel represented, so they expand on it in fic/seek out fics that do that.

Why should it be any different for people with autism?
