I can only give advice as a fellow hive-haver. A haver of hives. A hivey human.
If the hives start cooling off and are less angry-looking after an hour or two, I'm usually all good. If I get deep blistery looking ones and they don't go away, it's more likely a dermatitis-type reaction and it has to dry out and flake off in its own time (gross. so gross), but it won't kill me.

If you notice other symptoms though, don't hesitate to go to the doctor straight away. Breathing problems? Ambulance!
Allergic reactions are unpredictable bastards.

It's worth checking the ingredients on the topical anti-inflammatory so you know to avoid them in future, too.

It is Voltaren gel. I've never had a reaction to an NSAID before, so I don't get it. The only thing I've been allergic to before drug wise is Penicillin.

Ooh. I can't use that because it has a contraindication warning for asthma.

I'm guessing it has a different active ingredient to other NSAIDs if you've not had a reaction to anything else. You might want to call a pharmacy advice hotline if you have one wherever you live to give you a list of other stuff to avoid.

Voltaren topical products were actually pretty confusing to talk to people about when I worked in a pharmacy. There's a fair bit of conjecture over whether it's safe to use if you've got pre-existing conditions.

Wait, it does? I just thought it was aspirin-triggered asthma. Great job on my doctor for noticing that.

It doesn't specify on the label here, at least. I figure they're probably covering all their bases to avoid legal problems.

I've never had a doctor be as aware of my allergies and contraindications as I am, so I double check every single thing. It sounds paranoid, but they're busy people and sometimes they miss stuff.

I'd see it all the time at work, too. Someone would come in with a script for something and also want their regular meds and the two can't be taken together or one is for a condition that's contraindicated for the other medication. Always talk to a pharmacist when you go in, even for OTC stuff if you're not sure.

If you have an aspirin allergy, you have a CHANCE of being allergic to other NSAIDs. It's not a definite, so some doctors may try it anyway. My fiance has an allergy to aspirin but can take other NSAIDs fine (that said, it was a childhood allergy, and he hasn't tried aspirin since, so he's not sure if he's actually still allergic or not). But, it's something they definitely should have warned you about if you have an aspirin allergy -- and ESPECIALLY if your aspirin allergy triggers asthma. EEK.

I don't have an aspirin allergy, I just have normal asthma. The only med I'm allergic to is Penicillin. And now this. And now that I've done some research, the drug's website says that it isn't even recommended for hip pain. So I think my doctor kind of screwed up.

I know people it helps for hip pain, but usually the oral preparation is more effective. But, if you're allergic, definitely not an option for you. Ergh. If the hives start to back down, but if they get worse, or you notice other issues like breathing problems, ER ASAP.
