I've seen some really nice manips over the years, but the vast majority are just creepy and awful.

Someone in my fandom keeps making manips for fanfics that she likes, and they're terrible. She made one for one of my stories and it was so damn awkward. Usually I just ignore them, but that's not really an option when someone hands one directly to you.

Yeah, there's one artist who's just... brilliant; most of the time I'm staring at them going "how the hell did she do that?"

Operative word being "one." Most of the ones I've seen are embarrassingly awful.
