Bandom is something I've never been able to wrap my head around. I liked some of the music from the bands involved, but never cared about the people. But I was just sitting here thinking about it, and I think Metallica fandom would have to be all about hate-sex between James and Lars. Still not into it, but thanks for the hilarious mental image, anon.

The corner of bandom that I was in was like 80% AUs where they were basically OCs with familiar faces. There were some good stories, but having seen other RPF fandoms, I definitely understand why people tend to hate on RPF.

I remember one time, someone took a picture of a band member's mailbox and a good chunk of the fandom sort of shunned them for a while for being too creepy. I'm sure there are chunks of bandom that are tinhatty and shitty, but the part I was in was very against that shit and very adamant that we were only interested in stage personas and what the band members voluntarily put out there.

I wouldn't go back to it, but I don't really feel guilty for being in that fandom. It was chill and I had a good time.

I haven't looked into it lately, but a lot the people I knew in it were pretty cool.

Band fandoms have been my best fandom times. I was never into "bandom" in the sense of like, 2000s pop punk stuff, but goddamn, 70s glam fans and Kraftwerk nerds are just so lovely.

Oh, and Britpop nerds. Man those were some good times.

Those happen to tangentially be my kind of thing too, so I might dig around there too one day! I'm getting the sense some band fandoms are surprisingly, pleasantly chill.

Text: Tumblr made me realize that even after almost 10 years a slice of my heard still belongs to bandom

and the fact that I easily found shippers who speak up against tinhatting and harassing the people involved gives me hope for fandom.
