It didn't kill my interest in MCU, but I do agree with you.

Fandom suddenly turning on Tony because Steve is now the Golden Child is getting really grating and tiring. Tony's my second favorite (next to Bruce, who at this point I am very glad he doesn't get this much fandom attention), so seeing him constantly vilified by fandom (be it through CW speculation or that awful 'Tony says a Tumblr rage button unpopular opinion and starts the CW meme') is very exhausting.

I'll be honest, as someone who's never much liked Tony, I'm happy see this happen.

Though I do wish people hadn't gone to quite such an extreme, Tony's woobiefication was always the most annoying part of the MCU fandom because he's by far the character that least deserves it.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Tony woobification is so damn annoying, every time I see it I can't help but groan and roll my eyes. If I had a dollar for every time I read a fanfic where Howard beat and horribly experimented Tony, or Tony was abused and bullied by Steve or Nick or Pepper, I could pay off the US national dept.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That meme isn't making him a villain. It is just stupid jokes.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you serious with this? A meme is your evidence of vilification?

Forget Tumblr fandom, Iron Man is still by far the most popular character in this franchise for the mainstream moviegoers, okay? Be happy with that!

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think most of the Tony hate steams from the fact he's overexposed and always gets the most attention, even when he's in movies where he's not supposed to be the main character. (Avengers, Age of Ultron, etc.) So it's mostly backlash. And even though I don't hate Tony, I can definitly see where fan's frustration is coming from.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah...I'll admit that I'm kind of worried about Tony being in Cap 3. It's just...these are STEVE's movies. They're called CAPTAIN AMERICA, not Avengers 2.5.

I'm worried we're going to lose focus on him and his supporting cast.

:/

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I get it's backlash but it's very annoying with how OTT it is. And because most of fandom still has pockets of people who think liking a character who's a jerk makes you a misogynist or something.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have problems with the meme, but my problem are the "hilarious" posts where it's basically: "Tony doesn't get the joke! Tony isn't part of the team! Tony isn't invited to the party! Tony isn't our real friend!"

I'm not saying that Tony can't handle it...he's a character. But there are people who can relate to Tony who have ALSO been subjected to that kind of bullying. Me, for one. You might saying "well, it's just a character" but it's difficult to take these kinds of posts as jokes. I would also be offended if those jokes were centered around Steve.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's called 'projecting', Zoidberg.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry if I don't think thousands of people laughing at bullying is acceptable.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
You need to get a grip. Whatever your experience was, it has nothing to do with people having a bit of fun at the expense of a fictional kind-of-asshole whom everyone actually loves anyway.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of don't get this. I've read LOADS of fics where Steve is isolated from the team for a number of reasons: he's the "man out of time" and can't connect, everyone has these huge misconceptions about him and don't give him a chance, he's depressed and isolates himself, etc.

I don't really feel that's offensive.

Plus...Tony's kind of dick sometimes. He can be a real ass to a lot of people and so people are justified in not liking him. That you relate to him doesn't mean they wouldn't like you. It seems a bit silly to have people not able to like him because you relate to him.

Hell, I relate HUGELY to Anakin Skywalker, but I get why people don't like him and I wouldn't dream of telling them not to joke about how whiny and unsympathetic they find him.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, no no, I'm not saying that people aren't allowed to like him. I don't care if every person on Earth doesn't like him.

I was trying to type out an explanation but I realized that maybe it's invalid. All I'm saying is that I been part of friend groups that made fun of me and belittled me behind my back, and I've talked to several other people who have as well. I just don't like it when it's framed as a joke. People can do what they want, but I don't like it.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, I can understand not liking it when someone you relate to is made fun of.

But you have to consider that for some people, Tony can come across as a bit of a bully and so seeing the tables turned is cathartic.

For instance, him saying they should have left Steve on ice and antagonizing him is pretty inexcusable.

Steve had just been woken up for like, two weeks, when New York was invaded. This is a man who recently lost EVERYONE he knew and loved. Who lost his entire world. Whose last action before being frozen alive was to basically to choose to kill himself for the greater good.

Tony's behavior is fucking AWFUL, particularly because he more than most people knows about Steve's life given that his father was a friend. And yet you'll see TONS of people in fandom have STEVE be the one to apologize to Tony.

So...yeah...for some people it's cathartic to see the tables turned a bit.

Doesn't make it right, but you have to remember that Tony isn't completely innocent and acts like a bully himself at times.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, considering the amount of shit he gets away with in canon and fanon, and how many fans excuse and woobify him, I think you can handle a few jokes now and then.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
I am sorry that happened to you (I've experienced similar, myself!), but the difference probably is that Tony is...kind of a huge jerk. Not that I don't love him, 'cause I do, but I'm also 100% for the others in the group doing stuff without him and slamming on him from time to time.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I actually welcome the Tony hate because for so long the situation has been the other way around, with Steve being vilified by the Tony fandom. I'm also rather burnt out on how over saturated Iron Man is in the MCU.

I realize it's unfair and stupid that fandom has to pit the two against each other in the first place and it'd be nice if that never happened at all, but the petty bitter part of me can't help but feel a tad vindicated now.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. All the responses you're getting to this comment are making me reallyglad I'm not in the fandom. I'm not pro Tony woobification, but still.
