I honestly never got the appeal of party games IRL, and party games in fic almost always seem ridiculously and inappropriately juvenile to me, especially when you have characters who are already adults.

I guess in a HSAU I could see it. I guess.

But maybe that's because I'm a repressed stick-in-the-mud (read: it's almost certainly because of that).

I like party games in theory, but in practice, I've never encountered any that weren't exceedingly stupid. Drinking games could be fun, but I'm a total abstainer. I always win at never have I ever because I can name all the romance-related things like kissing and dating, so that's not particularly engaging, either. The rest of them require no intellectual involvement whatsoever AND don't result in anything interesting or pleasant. I guess I'll just stick with board games until someone invents a party game that's actually fun :/

/another stick-in-the-mud here, apparently

If you don't drink alcohol, I recommend Circle of Death. It's a drinking game played with cards and a lot of fun even if you don't drink alcohol. My friends and I have played it with only water and soda probably even more often than with alcohol.

I'm with you there. Most party games like the ones named in the secret, you play as a teenager, so I can see why the OP would complain about them being terrible. Having adults act like teenagers is almost always wildly OOC.

This. They just seem boring and kind of stupid, and a tired, cliched way of getting character a and character be to be 'forced' to 'fess up, or kiss, or whatever.

Plus, half of them involve the players being drunk, which is about the *most* boring thing i can think of do *or* read.

"'Never Have I Ever' as plot contrivance to make character reveal some secret about themselves" is the lamest piece of shit I've had the displeasure to read in about fifty different fics.

I actually have hardly ever come across "Never Have I Ever" in fics for my fandoms, and the few times I have, yeah, it's terrible. And thinking about it, of course it's going to be terrible, because it's a silly plot contrivance. Like, objectively, I know all that.

But some ridiculous part of me still wants to see it anyway. Thus, secret.

That's kind of why this is a secret for me. I'm a grown arse woman who hated irl drinking games even when I was the right age for them, so it's a juvenile and odd thing for me to want out of fic. I really shouldn't be surprised that I'm often disappointed by the stories, because of course they're either short and silly (which can actually be fun but I want MORE), or completely ooc, or immature and pointless.

I think what I like about the idea of these fics is that the games provide situations for characters to reveal parts of themselves to their surprised friends?
