What would non-terrible party games fic look like? Do you think everyone is OOC, or what?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes God forbid fanfic to stray from canon! Where would that bring us?!

That's what I'm guessing. And I can see where OOC-ness would be abound in these sorts of fics.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
In my experience, the ooc-ness isn't even the big problem for me, as I just stop reading those fics.

It's more, I don't know, like, the reveals are never as much fun as I feel like they should be, or even if the main characters are in character, the other characters are written badly. I just feel like, even if the trope itself is pretty juvenile, and so I expect the fics to be a bit silly, I wish the writing was a bit more mature.

Which is ridiculous.

YES to gay chicken in every fandom. It should be a trend on par with high school/barista/etc. fic. Imagine Ghostbuster's Gay Chicken. Or Game of Thrones' Gay Chicken or ...

Give me your best examples!

I'd never heard of gay chicken before but after looking it up I have to wonder if straight people are really repulsed by the idea of touching people of the same sex enough for this to be worth it as a game. This just seems really weird to me.

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2015-03-21 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd never heard of it before, either, and the name sounded very strange to me. I thought perhaps it has to do with the other meaning of the word "gay", as in... you either suddenly make yourself look very cheerful and dainty or you lose?

Then I read your comment and googled it and now I admit I'm actually kind of disturbed. I don't understand the mindset you have to have in order to find anything like that entertaining. It's not a matter of sexualities - and I'm asexual - it's just that touching other people this way feels inherently bad and invasive and inappropriate.

I've never heard of it either. BUT. With a lot of those other games, there's a strong element of... I guess, setting up a game so that you're 'forced' to do something that you secretly are really interested in doing but that social norms frown on. So, like, a lot of the dynamic of truth or dare is about using the dynamics of the game to force and/or allow people to reveal truths that would normally be hidden or to do things that would normally be frowned on, but often, there's an element of desire there. So it wouldn't surprise me if something like gay chicken were, at least sometimes, an excuse for experimentation.

... and that's one of the dorkiest things i've ever written

The only place I've ever heard of gay chicken before is the webcomic Manly Guys Doing Manly Things, where it starts as a staring contest between Kratos and Leonidas, and ends up with them roaring at each other in a very manly manner as they buy tea lights and act like an old married (and excessively testosterone-fuelled) couple. So I always thought it was just, you know, a joke. I have no idea if it's ever really existed in the real world.

I have seen it played but mainly amongst frat guys so that is probably the answer to the question of which straight people are that homophobic.

I honestly never got the appeal of party games IRL, and party games in fic almost always seem ridiculously and inappropriately juvenile to me, especially when you have characters who are already adults.

I guess in a HSAU I could see it. I guess.

But maybe that's because I'm a repressed stick-in-the-mud (read: it's almost certainly because of that).

I like party games in theory, but in practice, I've never encountered any that weren't exceedingly stupid. Drinking games could be fun, but I'm a total abstainer. I always win at never have I ever because I can name all the romance-related things like kissing and dating, so that's not particularly engaging, either. The rest of them require no intellectual involvement whatsoever AND don't result in anything interesting or pleasant. I guess I'll just stick with board games until someone invents a party game that's actually fun :/

/another stick-in-the-mud here, apparently

I'm with you there. Most party games like the ones named in the secret, you play as a teenager, so I can see why the OP would complain about them being terrible. Having adults act like teenagers is almost always wildly OOC.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2015-03-21 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
This. They just seem boring and kind of stupid, and a tired, cliched way of getting character a and character be to be 'forced' to 'fess up, or kiss, or whatever.

Plus, half of them involve the players being drunk, which is about the *most* boring thing i can think of do *or* read.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
"'Never Have I Ever' as plot contrivance to make character reveal some secret about themselves" is the lamest piece of shit I've had the displeasure to read in about fifty different fics.

That's kind of why this is a secret for me. I'm a grown arse woman who hated irl drinking games even when I was the right age for them, so it's a juvenile and odd thing for me to want out of fic. I really shouldn't be surprised that I'm often disappointed by the stories, because of course they're either short and silly (which can actually be fun but I want MORE), or completely ooc, or immature and pointless.

I think what I like about the idea of these fics is that the games provide situations for characters to reveal parts of themselves to their surprised friends?

I'm trying to think of a party games fic that isn't just a framing device for sex, and I'm drawing a blank.

I think they are just honestly hard to write well.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
We may get nostalgic over the games, but they can be seriously awkward, uncomfortable, and/or embarrassing, which can be difficult to write. Plus they have a sort of unique vibe to them that seems like it would hard to capture - the trying to seem sophisticated and experienced juxtaposed with playing a game that's mostly played by teenagers.

You secret is pretty~

Anyway, the terribleness of party game fics is just an extension of the terribleness of reading about people getting drunk in contrast to the fun of getting drunk yourselves. Maybe... get drunk before reading party game fics and see if they improve under the influence?

I haven't been in the Yu-Gi-Oh! fandom in years and I can still feel the sting of disappointment that I never found a well-written party game/shadow game fic.
