I'd never heard of gay chicken before but after looking it up I have to wonder if straight people are really repulsed by the idea of touching people of the same sex enough for this to be worth it as a game. This just seems really weird to me.

I'd never heard of it before, either, and the name sounded very strange to me. I thought perhaps it has to do with the other meaning of the word "gay", as in... you either suddenly make yourself look very cheerful and dainty or you lose?

Then I read your comment and googled it and now I admit I'm actually kind of disturbed. I don't understand the mindset you have to have in order to find anything like that entertaining. It's not a matter of sexualities - and I'm asexual - it's just that touching other people this way feels inherently bad and invasive and inappropriate.

I'm coming at it from the opposite direction. How is touching someone who doesn't line up with your orientation so much different from touching anyone you're not particularly attracted to? Why do you have to make a big thing out of it because "eww gay!" when it's really not a big deal? Why not just play a really sexual game of truth or dare if you want to have fun watching people touch people they're not attracted to and forget the giant no homo hovering over the whole thing?

I probably sound a lot more offended than I really am. I'm rolling my eyes more than anything.

Oh, I agree with that, too. If it's a genuine "eww gay" sort of game, it's offensive and disturbing on multiple levels, this one included.

The nonnie below offered a pretty neat explanation, which, I suppose, makes the game and its context more understandable, but which also makes the homophobia/biphobia undertones blatant.

I've never heard of it either. BUT. With a lot of those other games, there's a strong element of... I guess, setting up a game so that you're 'forced' to do something that you secretly are really interested in doing but that social norms frown on. So, like, a lot of the dynamic of truth or dare is about using the dynamics of the game to force and/or allow people to reveal truths that would normally be hidden or to do things that would normally be frowned on, but often, there's an element of desire there. So it wouldn't surprise me if something like gay chicken were, at least sometimes, an excuse for experimentation.

... and that's one of the dorkiest things i've ever written

Yeah, that's kind of what I thought, too. You do have a particular sort of company for that. In settings where all the participants are genuinely 100% straight/ace, this would be just disturbing and no fun.

I just think that kind of experimentation has been doing just fine over the years without being so overt about the orientation thing. I have straight guy friends who have kissed other guys in a game of truth or dare.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose. I guess I just don't see the problem if you want to have a game that specifically focuses on that.

My other thing is that it just seems like it would get really boring pretty fast. Doesn't the joke wear out pretty quickly? But whatever, I don't have to play it. I'm not even sure I can since I'm bi and there's no one I'm not supposed to want to touch.

I think in real life it would get boring pretty fast (or just turn into makeouts).

I think in fandom it could be good. Again, mostly because it would just turn into makeouts. But also because you can have the whole "sexual tension between people who aren't sure they're into each other or don't know if they're gay" thing, and also you can do the thing where someone gets unexpectedly turned on more than they expect to by something, and that's basically my favorite thing ever in smut, so I'm okay with it.

OP

That's a pretty good explanation, actually.

And the thing is, I completely agree with Sarilla that these things get old quick, and that gay chicken in particular is just absurd.

But I want to read it anyway, and the fact that I've yet to find a satisfying fic with these tropes just makes me want it more.

This reminds me of the time I was with a couple of "straight guys" who were playing gay chicken and then later it turned out that one of them was gay and the other bisexual

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The only place I've ever heard of gay chicken before is the webcomic Manly Guys Doing Manly Things, where it starts as a staring contest between Kratos and Leonidas, and ends up with them roaring at each other in a very manly manner as they buy tea lights and act like an old married (and excessively testosterone-fuelled) couple. So I always thought it was just, you know, a joke. I have no idea if it's ever really existed in the real world.

I might be able to get behind this sort of thing, where it's a joke on the manly stereotypes that make the premise of the game even make sense.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I have seen it played but mainly amongst frat guys so that is probably the answer to the question of which straight people are that homophobic.
