I'll make fanforum pretty broad, it can be a website with a forum, a newsgroup, a mailing list, a webring, journalling groups, any way that fans can come together and partake of threaded discussions on the characters, settings, and creator activities.
I agree completely, and wish more people thought about it like that. Unfortunately there's so little of it, I'm not really sure they do.
