...I still haven't chosen a side (I have barely touched the story) but from what I've seen/heard of the Stormcloaks I would never want to join them. (I imagine they aren't all bad, but the racist ones make me go, "Nope".)

Have you reached Windhelm (Ulfric Stormcloak's city), yet? Getting there pretty much cemented me as an Imperial. Imperial cities aren't devoid of racism (mostly against Khajiit, and at least one Cyrodiilic* NPC seems to have a low opinion of Nords), but nothing like Windhelm.

I imagine they aren't all bad

Ironically, Ulfric himself, is, IMO, among the least-bad. But Stormcloak doctrine and rhetoric seems to be directed more by Galmar Stone-Fist than Ulfric.

* I refuse to call the race Imperial...read one too many discussion that conflated the race and the faction.

I did, actually. After I visited Windhelm to speak with Ulfric I decided to just fuck around with more side-quests because I didn't know what to do. The racism was strong there and I didn't fit in with the Stormcloak's at all. I didn't spend long there (at the palace, anyway), but Ulfric did seem to be the best of them. Still...I can't get past what the majority of them seem to believe.

The empire is no prize, but Stormcloak rhetoric is really creepy, life if the revolutionary heroes were all Ted Cruz teapartiers. I was so annoyed with myself after I chose that side and realized what I'd gotten into. When you walk down the street in their main town, some idiot is always spouting some racist nonsense. Ugh.

It isn't my favorite place, that's for sure. Lol.

I've heard some interesting but vague spoilers about the Empire, ones that aren't all too pleasant (I should just get back to the game so I know what the fuck is going on), but I see them as the lesser of the two evils. I'm sure neither is perfect but if I have to pick a side, it isn't going to be the Stormcloaks. (Which is a shame because the name is so damn satisfying.)

Racism, even fictional, really grinds my gears.
