This reminds me of the Death Eater and Hydra cosplayers. I can't help but associate them with racist ideologies that have parallels in the real world (and in fact, Hydra was explicitly set up as Nazi Germany's secret superpower research division).

...I still haven't chosen a side (I have barely touched the story) but from what I've seen/heard of the Stormcloaks I would never want to join them. (I imagine they aren't all bad, but the racist ones make me go, "Nope".)

God, I SO agree. I find people who stan Ulfric intensely creepy. It's like fangirling a white supremacist. What makes it worse is that Ulfric parrots all the kind of stuff I hear from UKIP supporters every day, so it depresses me with how realistic it is.

I'm playing through my first character on Skyrim at the moment and I got so caught up with other stuff I genuinely forgot to pick a side - so, when you could get the Greybeards arrange a truce, I just went with that.

For the next character, going Imperial because this whole civil war is just playing into the Thalmor's hands - as a separate Skyrim from the Empire with both severely weakened from the civil war would make it much easier for eventual takeover of both.

And as bad as the Stormcloaks are for racism, they've got nothing on the Thalmor.

I do feel a little bit sorry for the Stormcloaks, but for the most part I think they're complete idiots. Even leaving aside their blatant, hypocritical racism against the Dunmer, Argonians and Khajiit, they're a bunch of whiny morons who don't even realize they're basically cutting off their nose to spite their face. Ulfric's a fool not to see that his war is only playing right into the Thalmor's hands and that they're ultimately going to be the only ones profiting from it. The Dominion doesn't give a damn who wins this little uprising, they're just glad that the humans are killing each other and saving them the trouble of having to do it themselves. While all of Skyrim is distracted by the Civil War, those Thalmor fuckers are taking the opportunity to prepare their own forces for round two of the Great War with absolutely no interference from the Empire whatsoever. Ulfric is basically doing their job for them without ever realizing it. D'oh!

...Wow, I may need to take a break from playing Skyrim for a while.

Nah brah, whichever side you pick is the 'right' side.

Side with the Imperials and further cement the Empire's resistance against the Thalmor and potentially reunite the other now-independent countries (while carefully ignoring the racism that lead to the southern rebellions seen in Oblivion).

Side with the Stormcloaks and reform the racist elements of the movement from the inside while also securing Skyrim's place as a force to rival the Thalmor and the heart of a NEW empire by uniting the various formerly-Imperial states.

Yup, it sound awfully familiar to some past real live events. I wanted to join them but after hearing all their racist crap I said fuck it. The Thalmors are the worse trough.

Hah. Funny thing is, I could sort of get behind the "Skyrim should be ruled by the Nords" idea. I was leaning towards siding with the Stormcloaks for the longest time

Then I got to Windhelm and saw the slum. And then I went to talk to Ulfric and he went right into a Fuck All The Foreigners rant... to my Altmer character's face. Yeah, no, fuck you too.

Okay, so I don't know the game, BUT what is an "out of game" Stormcloak supporter. I mean, are there Stormcloak supporters in real life who are meeting at a secret club or something? If it's a video game, aren't you always going to be an "in game" supporter?

I had a friend from another fandom who is a hardcore and argumentative Stormcloak supporter. I actually severed because her reasons for supporting the Stormcloaks creeped me out, and I was glad I did because she turned out to be super into Gamer Gate and started asserting that women hold all the power in American society.

It boiled down to "Help racists be racists, or help people who lost a war who are as a result allied with racists."

I chose option 3 - Side with the Empire, dick over the Thalmor at every opportunity. :)
