But only the Storm cloaks have female guards. I don't know if that's meaningful but to me, it was racism vs sexism.

The second in command of the Imperial forces in Skyrim is a woman.

There are no women in command of Stormcloak forces.

There's also more Imperial aligned female Jarls - ignoring Elisif who can go for both sides, there's Idgrod, Brina, & Maven vs Sorli and Laila.

Sexism is clearly not a major factor in Skyrim, but if you're going to count off female NPCs and use that to determine sexism - there might by a larger number among the Stormcloaks, but they don't rise as far as often.

One of the reasons I love the Elder Scrolls universe so much is that it was always so much more progressive about gender than your run-of-the-mill RPG. Right from Arena, the world established that it was far less sexist than its pseudo-medieval setting might imply. In Tamriel, gender is not an issue and I love that.

... I had never noticed the gender gap with the Imperial guards, which is weird. I guess you could argue that Legate Rikke is Tulius' right-hand woman, so that's something. Also I don't know if you noticed but in the Imperial camps, many of the hospital tents have wounded women in them who are labelled "Imperial Soldier".

But now you mention it, it annoys me that the footsoldiers are all male. The Imperials have never been a super patriarchal culture. And it doesn't fit in with the rest of Skyrim, either, because town guards/bandits/forsworn are all 50-50.
