Slashes don't work in tags on tumblr. Most of the people who use portmanteau names also hate them but they're by far the most practical option these days as so much of fandom is on tumblr.

There. Now you know and you can stop worrying about all these fictitious people who don't realize that portmanteau names are ugly and stupid.

We know. But slashes don't work!

This comment is just baffling to me. If what you say is true, then wouldn't people only use portmanteau names in Tumblr tags? But instead I see people using portmanteau names everywhere: on LJ and DW and Goodreads and in comments to online newspaper articles and etc., none of which require it in the least.

I can't speak for everyone, but before tumblr and its unfortunate tagging system desensitized me, I used to loathe portmanteau ship names. However, I recognized even then that they were often useful for web searches:

If you ship a pair of characters who fall into the "those two guys" or "team rocket" category, in the sense that they're almost always together and primarily interact with one another, searching for "Character/Character" often brings up a whole lot of webpages that don't have a shipping angle at all. If there's a commonly agreed-upon ship name, you get a much more focused set of search results - unless it's one of those unfortunate ships where the portmanteau forms a pre-existing word or name, in which case it's entirely pointless.

It could be power of influence between Tumblr and as some other have mentioned some anime fandoms over the years. When I was on LJ, I saw the use of slashes or x's for ships (Western fandoms) mixed with use of portmanteaus, so idk.

because it's easier to use the same term for everything rather than switch back and forth depending on where you're posting?
