How can I be polite about this...fuck you. NO I'M JOKING that's okay. Slashes are boring, and it's fun to make new words!

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's easy to search for on Tumblr. The tag system doesn't support slashes.

I'm not a fan of them either, but mostly because they never sound right to me.

But I'll take them over the titles any day of the week (Soviet Spouses, Birds of a Feather etc. etc. etc.) because at least with the portmanteau I know (usually) what it is I'm getting into.

I agree with you 90% of the time. Most of the time I say write the names out. Silmarillion ship names, though, are hilarious and I'll forever love them. So if a ship name cracks me up, I'm okay with it.

as a yu-gi-oh fan, i really prefer "___shipping" ship names.

but as far as i know, the only fandoms that have them are the yu-gi-oh series, pokemon, and i think golden sun.

I prefer them to the "descriptive" ship names that some fandoms use (Looking at you, fandoms for children's card games.)
dreemyweird: (austere)

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2015-03-21 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I find them endearing. Granted, it may be because I'm not an EFL and so can't hear how ridiculous they sound.

I'm also a little irked I can't use them with my brOTPs, seeing as there's such a strong association between portmanteaus and romance, but I make up for it by creating brOTP titles.

I admit I probably come off as having no taste. But I really don't get all the hate.

Language in the subculture that is fandom. Oh, wow. We squish things together. Make new words. Squish names together. Portmanteaus. Amazing!

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. I hate that too, but not as much as just sticking the names together with nothing in between: it makes me think of the characters sewed together à la human centipede.

I agree with you for the most part - I am in a fandom where the RL persons have actually made the portmanteaus themselves, so it's kind of hard not to slip into using the names since they're canon.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind them but some of them are completely ridiculous and stupid sounding (none come to mind immediately, guess I'm blocking them, lol)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)

Outside of organizational reasons, portmanteaus are the bomb diggity. Saying them out loud is also funner than saying usernames out loud. Like Jisbon.

Jizzzzzzz

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
In a bandom where the band actually made portmanteaus of themselves unironically, I find it very difficult to hate on them.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
My problem is, I often have trouble figuring out who the portmanteau means. I admit I'm sometimes slow.

Slashes don't work in tags on tumblr. Most of the people who use portmanteau names also hate them but they're by far the most practical option these days as so much of fandom is on tumblr.

There. Now you know and you can stop worrying about all these fictitious people who don't realize that portmanteau names are ugly and stupid.

We know. But slashes don't work!

I sort of feel you? Some of them are awful and I wouldn't blame people for not using them (I always use Steve/Bucky, Steve x Bucky or just Cap and Buck instead of Stucky because I hate Stucky), but others are quite fun or cute. I don't mind Sterek, but I don't think it's particularly catchy either. I'll always like McShep because it's simple and sounds like a McDonald's hamburger. Adoribull is the best, and I don't even ship the pairing that much. Others like Spork (Spock/Kirk) or Peeniss (Katniss/Peeta) are hilarious and catchy. It just depends on the fandom.

I don't usually like them unless they're clever and/or puns.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I still don't understand how the prevailing one for Kirk/Spock isn't either Kock or Spork.

I like Stilish, Peenis has a certain charm, and Caskett just fits.
