they're practical and useful, sorry

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
No they're not really either. Only practical for lazy tumblrites who can't be arsed to use the + sign. And not practical because who the hell is in the pairing? At least with the names, you can figure it out a hell of a lot faster.

They are neither practical nor useful.

I don't use the + sign because I don't trust tumblr not to make an update that fucks up the tag system by making other non-letters unsearchable. Smushes are both practical and useful.

Besides the current phenomenon of them, portmanteaus in general are nothing new and a result of the flexibility of language, not laziness.

Not being able to figure out a portmanteau is on you.

The ship name nazis have arrived

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
It IS practical. Just because it doesn't work for you doesn't mean it's not convenient for others. Obviously since so many people use it in virtually every fandom with shipping then that should tell you something about it's usefulness. And are you seriously calling people lazy for using portmanteaus? Please. It's fandom. It's supposed to be fun not a fucking chore. Let people use what they for for christ sakes.

I know there are a lot of old people who want to write 'Hannah Mary Sue x Harry Thorton III' every time they talk about or search the ship. But hey, whatever works for you.

Imma stick to my portmanteaus thank you very much.

NA

I tried to come up with something clever for your example, but this is all I could think of:

HMS HarTTrip (okay, not a portmanteau, but it's definitely a ship name)

HarryHan

Surton (like certain)

Thorue

HaHa

HasHat

if you've been in the fandom for over an hour you can pick up on who's in the pairing, it's really not that difficult to remember
