1. People are lazy.

2. slash isn't primarily supported by tumblr tags.

3. using "character X character" splits the ship into TWO tags to keep track of.

4. You generally (read: kinda) know which characters end up being paired.

5. Easy to remember, at least for a plurality of fans.

IMO, it's really up to you to choose the slash names. Unfortunately, some slash names get more attention than others, both in the best and worst senses of the word.
