Re: What are your thoughts on adults who live with their parents?

If they have a reliable source of income and contribute fairly to the household, and don't answer to their parents (nor do their parents expect them to anymore), then it's no different to me than if they shared space and expenses with any roommate. Even though I'm US American, it's stranger to me that we push so hard for family members to isolate themselves from each other. I mean, why? If you get along and have a healthy relationship with your folks, you're one of the lucky few, enjoy both the emotional and financial benefits of staying close to them for as long as it suits you all. Unnecessary distance doesn't somehow make you a better adult.

I'm with you on that it depends on whether the parents treat them on equal footing now that they're contributing. If they are and allow their child to participate in adult activities then there's no issue. However if the parents make a fuss about their child having a date spend the night or otherwise patronizing them that's highly unhealthy. All that's doing is postponing their child's own growth and independence. Personally I've seen a lot of the latter and only one example of the former so I'm more of the opinion that it's probably best for everyone if the person lives on their own abd not with their parents.

That one example is enough for me to take the situation on a case-by-case basis, personally. Like I said, a healthy adult relationship with parents is uncommon, but it does exist, and I don't expect them to imitate the families that are a mess for no good reason.
