I never finished the first book, but I didn't find the portrayal of Jamie as cringe-worthy as I imagined. But the protagonist, Claire, was thoroughly unlikable. Whiny, bratty, and so ~feisty~ in a way we're probably supposed to admire but just make her seem childish and obnoxious. I found the TV show Claire to be really elegant and easy to admire, but it's obvious that it comes from the actress and not the source material.

What really made me skeptical of Diana Gabaldson's writing was all of her opinions on Scottish independence, and the way she seems to be such a, err, Scotland fangirl... despite being American herself. idk I don't mean she doesn't have the right to an opinion, and I'm sure she's done a lot of research and all, but the attitude just rubbed me the wrong way.

The Jamie-worship gets more obvious as the series continues. I agree with you about the whole opinion on Scottish independence thing, though. Being the author of even a bestselling series set in Scotland doesn't make anyone an expert.

Wish I could like or +1 both comments on this mini-thread.

As for opinions on things that don't concern you... this is me just venting. I have an acquaintance from Canada who has a LOT of opinions about American politics. I had to mute her on Facebook because she was just driving me nuts. Her opinions were never going to amount to anything (and she's rather an ignorant woman anyway), and she was never going to change. So I had to by not reading her thoughts any more.

I know... only tangentally related to the actual secret, but thanks for letting me share.

As another Canadian who likes to rant about American politics... America is like the center of the internet. It's impossible to go three steps without encountering people talking about American politics on Reddit or whatever. Sure, I care about Canadian politics, but the rest of the internet doesn't even know what I'm talking about, so I talk about American politics with everyone else.

Everything on the internet is America-centric, you can't blame people outside the States from having opinions. Especially since America is, well, the most powerful nation on the planet. It absolutely affects us, and Canada, being your closest neighbour, is affected in many ways by American policy and economics.

You don't have to be some kind of expert to know that every place that can possibly do so should declare independence from the UK

All you have to have is the sense of innate truth that God granted as his gift to all Americans

Nationalistic history troll? Well, +1 for creativity, I guess.

If by "sense of innate truth" you mean "hypocritical self-righteousness" then yes, it becomes obvious.

I lol'd.

Well said, bravo.
