[Diana Gabaldon, Outlander series]

(Anonymous) 2015-03-23 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I never finished the first book, but I didn't find the portrayal of Jamie as cringe-worthy as I imagined. But the protagonist, Claire, was thoroughly unlikable. Whiny, bratty, and so ~feisty~ in a way we're probably supposed to admire but just make her seem childish and obnoxious. I found the TV show Claire to be really elegant and easy to admire, but it's obvious that it comes from the actress and not the source material.

What really made me skeptical of Diana Gabaldson's writing was all of her opinions on Scottish independence, and the way she seems to be such a, err, Scotland fangirl... despite being American herself. idk I don't mean she doesn't have the right to an opinion, and I'm sure she's done a lot of research and all, but the attitude just rubbed me the wrong way.

The Jamie-worship gets more obvious as the series continues. I agree with you about the whole opinion on Scottish independence thing, though. Being the author of even a bestselling series set in Scotland doesn't make anyone an expert.

You don't have to be some kind of expert to know that every place that can possibly do so should declare independence from the UK

All you have to have is the sense of innate truth that God granted as his gift to all Americans

It's also possible, isn't it, that she sees her husband as sexy, and that they play "caber-toss"?

(After all, she doesn't have to be like Mel from FotC.)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-23 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Feeling sorry for her husband is probably not necessary. Someone writing self-insert fanfic and having fantasy crushes and elaborately concocted worlds doesn't make them a bad partner.

If it did, a lot of us here would be doomed.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-23 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You're a terrible partner. I just logged in from my laptop to tell you I'm leaving you for Diana from the shop. And yes, I know this was you.

It's pretty normal to fantasize, and most people have some notion of the "perfect partner." It's not necessarily wrong or bad, so long as the person recognizes that it's unrealistic and doesn't use it as an excuse to hold others to impossible standards.

As long as she's treating her husband well, I don't see why it would be a problem.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-23 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree

I also suspect that in secrets like this "I feel so sorry for her husband" is just a pale excuse to bag on them and be catty to someone who they think writes bad fiction and has fantasies.

Like a girl in high school going "eww I feel so bad for her boyfriend cause she's so fat" or whatever.

... She looks so much like someone I know and it's freaking me out. Worse, they're obsessed with the series.

...I have nothing to comment on this re: Outlander, but dang, she looks shockingly similar to one of my IRL best friends (someone who used to post on F!S back in the day, even).

Right, because wives all look like porn stars, right?

Fantasy is perfectly okay and it doesn't mean that people expect their partner to match up exactly to their fantasy.

Great, another person taking conclusion about someone marriage based on what that person write. I wish people stop putting their noses in writers personal lives, don't like their work? fine, just keep it about that people work and nothing more.

I never read the books, but...people in long term relationships CAN have fantasies about fictional people without that meaning they don't love their partner, you know.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-24 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I've lost interest in Outlander but when the first book was initially published, I read it and fell in love with Jamie. And I distinctly recall in multiple interviews Diana saying that Jamie was entirely based on her husband. So I don't think you need to pity him.

Text: I feel so bad for her husband.

Her books are such obvious fanfiction-like self-inserts and the way she drools over her own hero reminds me of Stephenie Meyer and her icky Edward obsession. No matter how good of a guy he is, he’ll never match up to the Gary Stu sexy highlander fantasy she’s concocted.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-24 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't feel bad about her husband. In her anti-fanfic screed, she said that she thinks of herself as Claire, her husband as Jamie and their daughter as whatever their daughter was called. So when you write fanfic you're RAPING HER FAMILY!

I'd only read the first book, but it put me off the rest for life. Her Lord John Grey books are somewhat better, probably because Jamie and Claire aren't in them. Though poor John has a terrible crush on Jamie (shock!) which is occasionally mentioned. I hope that John's not based on a family member...

The only way I can read the Outlander series is skipping straight to the Lord John Grey parts. I like her LJG series a lot more.
