I'm a little surprised no one seems to have asked about the arithmatic on this one.

By the time that their child is born, Gaiman will be 55 and Palmer will be 39.

By the time their child is in fifth grade, Gaiman will be 65 and Palmer will be 49.

By the time their child has left high school, Gaiman will be 75 and Palmer will be 59.

And by the time their child is my age (late 20's), Gaiman will be 82 and Palmer will be 66.

This is assuming that neither suffers from a degenerative disease which, if they have it, will appear around the time that they're still thinking about T-ball or summer camps or algebra homework. Also, Gaiman, before he dies, will want to sort out his estate since Palmer's child will have to contend with the other Gaiman children.

It's none of my business and all, but my parents were on the older side when they had me and, well, it's hard. I think a lot about what I'm going do when they become too sick to care for themselves. Most people don't need to think about that until after they've had kids and can plan it out and are established. I don't have that luxury because my parents are so much older than most people's parents--my dad especially. I guess if I have the option, I'd just try to not do that to the kids I might have.

I wonder if Gaiman will write something like Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" shortly after the child is born.

That is pretty striking. My father is pretty damn old (over 70) and I'm 26. I remember going skiing with my dad as a kid (he taught me to ski) and he'd be out for an hour or two and then spend the rest of the time in the lodge while I skied alone because his knees hurt. I did all the yard chores that required physical strength (lawnmowing, tree pruning, etc) starting from the age of 10 because my mother could no longer do it at her age. Having children at that age is an absolute strain on the limits of a person's health. Most people don't even consider that point.

Not to mention that Gaiman will probably die before he sees any grandchildren.
