I don't really see the problem, unless they are relatively recent historical people.

I have loads of favorite historical figures. I love all the crazy Roman emperors, Genghis Khan, etc. One of my all time favorites is Alexander the Great, and modern media tends to give him the hero cut, but arguably he was also a half-crazy bully who slaughtered a lot of people and had a temper. What d'ya do. I just can appreciate charisma in a historical figure, no matter how batshit they are!

I love Alexander the Great and he's so much more fun if you accept that he was a crazy self-obsessed asshole.

How horrible are we talking? Just the usual sexist/racist/homophobic according to their time, or are we talking the tortured people to death for fun sort of horrible?

If it's the first, I wouldn't worry about it. If it's the second, I wouldn't worry about it either, since their fictional selves can't be that similar to real life if they have fans.

" If it's the second, I wouldn't worry about it either, since their fictional selves can't be that similar to real life if they have fans."

you might be surprised what people will handwave in order to be a fan of someone

If the real life Hitler can have fans (see: Neo-Nazi movement) then any fictional character can certainly have fans even if they're awful.

Villains are the most fun in fiction, and most history is set long enough ago to soften the blow of terrible deeds and turn them into something like fables.

In other words, I see both why you'd be attracted to these characters and why you'd feel bad about it.

But loving horrible people can be so fun!

It's fun to read about bad people tho, they did a lot of interesting things. I mean as long as you're AWARE that they're bad people, which you are, and aren't trying to emulate them in your life.

For me the guilt level would depend on how the fictional portrayal is depicting them. I'd feel worse if I was only enjoying it because the current portrayal was deeply glossing over some of the worst things they'd done, or was trying to reframe terrible acts in a positive light. If it was a relatively true interpretation then I'd just see it as enjoying any 'bad' character -- you can completely appreciate how they're played out without ever actually condoning their actions.

Eh, there was this story I once read that had alternate versions of real-life people (and a few OC's) and it was supremely written well with all of them bring flawed in some way, and until today it's one of the most memorable and amazing fiction I've ever read.

You go with linking alternate characters, OP!

I don't think it's anything you need to feel guilty for. A historical person, fictionalized or otherwise, can be fascinating even if they did terrible things. Even if it was, say, Vlad Țepeș or someone like that - it isn't like you're going to take a page out of his book and go around impaling your enemies.

You realize that they did awful things, and presumably you aren't trying to emulate/imitate those things, so it's fine.

Vlad for a good portion was really morally grey to begin with.

Mainly I was trying to think of someone who's been fictionalized a lot.

Text: Most of my favorite characters right now are fictionalized historical figuresterrible people in real life, some even by the standards of their time.

I feel weirdly guilty about this.

op apologizes for subpar secret design.

The bar for being a "terrible person" is so low right now that I doubt any living people would actually pass the test, if they were as thoroughly researched as historical figures. Just enjoy your crush, you terrible person. :)

I would be careful about this.

Because a lot of people are usually fine with hypotheticals, but specific historical figures can get you a lot of flack. Though, in general, the longer ago it happened, the less people are concerned about it. For example, Genghis Khan would probably be fine, but Hitler would not. Or Gilles de Rais would probably be okay, while John Wayne Gacy would not.

Hitler real life was fascinating though, for everything he was evil about he was a genius for how he spun it to the German people. The guy was a propaganda genius.

Maybe, but I would think you should still be very careful about how and where you might say this.

Ahaha. I'm currently playing a dating sim where one of the love interests is Oda Nobunaga (the game's Japanese, I am not), and most of the characterizations in other works portray him as a demon-lord.
